PPW question

He's been fortunate - has been appointed to both academies and has ROTC options. Doing a overnight at USMA in a couple of weeks and a CVW at Navy the week after - that should help. For him anyhow, it has been a lot of activity - he plays three sports in HS, and with that and school work, etc - not a lot of time for refection - I think he will have some time to reflect over next few weeks - just finished basketball and baseball does not start in earnest till early April... We are just being supportive, and keep telling him there is no pressure - just think it all through. It was a bit different in my day, but some similarities - it all kind of snowballs and once you are accepted, there is some sense of pressure - expectations of others, etc. Exciting times for sure, but its been a bit of a whirlwind for him I think.
Be ready to ask lots of questions at CVW. Pick their brain. If you could, attend the briefs and Q&A for parents on Friday will definitely give you something to compare with your own experience. Best of luck to the fine young man you raised!

Thanks again - that is plan - going to go down with him - we live in MA, and go through the parent programs. He did Summer Seminar last summer, so has a decent sense, but i think shadowing a midshipman over the course of a regular day will be invaluable.

Skippers, FYI - some plebes volunteer and some get volunteered for CVW. My DD's plebe was less than thrilled to have a drag and frequently dumped her with other people. My DD made the best of it and made friends with others but got left alone in Bancroft during her plebe's classes. Just a warning in case your DS gets a less than stellar person.

DD experienced exactly the same with her plebe. She did enjoy going to the chemistry class and meeting some Mids. She still has contact with some of them and hoping to see them this summer.

Bummer to hear! i just assumed it would be like my older kids - my daughter went to ND and was a guide her last couple of years - she loved doing the tours...though i guess the shadow for a full day is more, so maybe the kids are not as thrilled...we'll hope for best!

Plebes know they are supposed to take them around for a variety of activities. Some are just having bad days or week. If you run into this, realize it will happen to you too while at USNA. They may have a big test they are cramming for or have upperclass all over them. Ask their room mate if you can tag along if they seem to be having one of those days. Ask to tag along with an upperclass who is in a major you are interested in. It's your visit, talk to more than just the Plebe host to get a variety of views.

Exactly Hoops.... I think our Plebe had exams and duty so DD found what she needed from others. Also skippers, they take on the drags for two days, in their rooms... not sure I'd be thrilled myself. I just wanted you to know and prepare your DS for all options. We never considered it and it was a huge let down.

I hate hearing that not everyone has a great experience with a CVW. My now-plebe was invited to a CVW in the fall of his junior year, out of the blue. At that time, he was all-in for USAFA, so I had to persuade him to go to the CVW. By the end of his visit, we both wanted to go to USNA! His CVW was awesome - great hosts, as well as upperclassmen who took time to talk with him. He still talks with his hosts regularly, now that they are the upperclassmen. In that vein, he regularly pays it forward and volunteers to host drags during CVWs whenever he is able. He says he probably wouldn't be at USNA now, if it weren't for that CVW, so he appreciates what it can mean for candidates and how life-changing those 3 days can be.

Funny, my son never went to a CVW. In fact, only set foot on The Yard once, during a tour as part of a Boy Scout camping weekend. That said, it was USNA or nothing. Didn't apply to any ROTC or any of the other academies. Everyone finds their own path there and has their own experience!

Not uncommon CoachKarl -- my first view of the Yard was as a NAPSTER, and that was well before the day of YOUTUBE, Virtual Tours, etc.
