Pre-Med at USCGA?

In browsing the USCGA web site, I gathered that the available majors are limited. The Marine and Environmental Sciences major is the only one that I can see that might offer the necessary prerequisite classes to apply to medical school. It also looks like a good number of USCGA cadets attend graduate programs after graduation. Do any attend medical school? Is this even a possibility and would the person then become a member of the USPHS?

I have limited knowledge on USCGA. I would assume it's the same as the other academies, where it is very difficult and a select few go to med school.

Very good read. thank you.

As far as CGA encouraging Cadets to persue Pre Med - it is not done as the Coast Guard does not have a Medical Corps of its own and therefore it is not of value to the Coast Guard. The Big 3 - West Point, Annapolis and Air Force will send you post grad to medical school but not CGA.

I will also note that there are VERY few slots for medical school after West Point, Air Force and Navy. The odds are VERY slim that any applicant will get that slot. Last year there were TWO slots given out at Navy- generally reserved for someone in the top 5 academic ranking out of almost 1100. If an applicant really wants to be a doctor, the best bet is to go to a standard college.

If you want to be a doc and be a CG officer, I believe (someone with better knowledge feel free to correct) the USCG uses USPHS and Contract physicians if no DoD facilities are readily available. At least that is how is used to work. CG will probably NOT send anyone to medical school because there is no Medical Corps within USCG. There is no such thing as a USCG Commissioned Medical Officer or Dental Officer. The only thing the USCG offers is either a PA or Corpsman, there is no medical officer position or paid medical school option in the CG.
