pre-recognition?

What happens if they don't get recognized?
The best answer I can give: it depends. It likely means conduct/aptitude probation and the possibility of dis enrollment, but it is ultimately up to the AOC of the four degree is question.
As far as WHY we do recognition... Well, it's hard to put into words. On the upperclassman side, it requires a massive amount of planning prior to the actual event. If I ever wondered why I put in the work I did for this weekend, it certainly disappeared as soon as I saluted the C4Cs I pinned on and saw the happiness and pride in their eyes. Again, there are just some feelings in life that are indescribable.
Lastly, recognition is a tradition that is unique to USAFA. WP and USNA may have their own traditions, but I can guarantee that they don't compare to ours. ;)

can you be under conduct/aptitude if you had not passed pft?

No; if a cadet is deficient in physical fitness, they are placed on athletic probation. This means they have a P.E.A. below a 2.0 or a significantly deficient PFT score (or both). A caveat to this is that they could be placed on conduct/aptitude probation is if they have a poor attitude towards athletic probation.

Another note to what Haley said- technically they could be placed on aptitude probation if they were on two or more probations (athletic and something else, for example.)
