Good evening, my son wears contacts but they are not allowed at NSI.He has a regular pair of glasses but we were thinking if he needs to swim or do anything very physical they might not hold up. I was thinking of getting him a pair of Ranger goggle or some clear Oakleys

Anyone know these answers?

Can they take more than one pair?

If they can, are sport style frames ok?

If they can only take one pair, which type would be best?

Thanks

Not to oversimplify, but recommendation here would be for you to invest in a pair glasses that are both sturdy enough to withstand more athletic activity and comfortable enough to wear during the many awake hours through NSI, if you think his current pair may not withstand... Is his vision so weak that he cannot swim without glasses - typically glasses aren't worn during swimming. And, he will need to swim/ jump off an approx 10 foot platform. Maybe get an eyeglass adjustment so that the frame is "tight" / wouldn't fall off if jogging, for example. I don't see a benefit of switching back and forth vs just getting one pair that works, as where would he put/ hold a second pair all day scurrying among the fun activities at Great Lakes. For that matter, beyond great lakes he'll need a functional pair through NROTC training as well. Make sense? Good luck to him and thanks for his willingness to serve.

General gouge about NSI is that candidates should seek to not stand out unless it's for outstanding performance and/or teamwork. Most of the sport-style frames I've seen are not low-key (neon, et al.) and that might draw attention. The other style like rec-specs just are not comfortable to wear all day, even if functional. You could take a second pair, just like some candidates will have sunglasses in their bag, but all of that/ their cell phones etc. would likely be checked in on intake and not returned to the candidate until the end, so, why bother.

I wouldn't worry to much about the swimming portion as far as glasses. It is more floating with alittle swimming mixed in. Unless he is completely blind without his glasses, he likely would be fine without them for the few minutes he is in the water. A spare set of glasses is not a bad idea. If they are more "sporty" with a strap to make him feel better great. I would stay away from anything that looks TOO sporty or ski mask like. He will spend more time waiting to go into the water than actually spend in the water.

I use contacts daily. For NSI, I purchased and brought 2 pairs of $15 glasses off Amazon for NSI that worked perfectly. Just make sure you bring glasses cleaner, they get dirty very quick. They don't care which kind you bring.
