Presidential Vs. Special Nomination

Hello all,

I have a question to whether which Nom is better. The "Children of Deceased/Disabled Vets, POW, MIA" is limited to 65 overall, so say around 16/year. The Presidential source has an unlimited number of applications. As I am eligible for both, I can only choose one. Of course, many more would be eligible for the Presidential source but it's also an unlimited amount. While the Special Nom has significantly less eligible, it's also capped at 65. Which one would be better to choose?

Thank you!

Just my opinion but you will have much less competition under the Children of Deceased/Disabled Vets, POW, MIA. The Presidential nom is unlimited, but generally you have around 800 candidates who qualify for this nom with 100 slots. Others may have a different view.

It isn't an either/or type of thing. USNA recommends on their application website that you "apply for ALL NOM's for which you are eligible". You have no control over which NOM might be used to offer you an appointment and one type of NOM isn't any 'better' then another.

Curious why someone can’t apply for both?

I just looked at the USNA Nominations website, and upon cursory review, the application for the Presidential and "Special" Nomination looks the same, and both request a "Presidential" nomination. I'm speculating, but it appears that the Special is really just a subset of the Presidential pool, with 65 spots reserved for those that qualify. Recommend you apply for both, and let Admissions figure out which one to charge you to if qualified for appointment.

Most important, Candidates should apply for all NOMs for which you are eligible, including all MOC, even if eligible for the Presidential/Special...this gives Admissions greater flexibilty to find a space for you as they build the class.

GREAT ADVICE! Let admissions figure it out. Apply for both.

Right on the Presidential Nomination form there are boxes for ALL categories of Presidential Nom. Check ALL that apply, and I understand that each available Presidential Nom gets looked at by a different Admissions Group. Some have statutory requirements that need to be met by both the applicant and the Academy. Make sure you submit ALL required documentation for EACH category. Good Luck!

If you meet the requirements for this nomination (first quoted section), you are not eligible for a presidential nomination (see last line of second quoted section). This was the situation for one of my candidates a couple of years ago..only one nomination and it was the one listed in (a)(1) and not (b)(1). As others have said, still check all applicable boxes, but only expect one.

(a) The authorized strength of the Brigade of Midshipmen (determined for any year as of the day before the last day of the academic year) is 4,400 or such lower number as may be prescribed by the Secretary of the Navy under subsection (h). Subject to that limitation, midshipmen are selected as follows:
(1) 65 selected in order of merit as established by competitive examination from the children of members of the armed forces who were killed in action or died of, or have a service-connected disability rated at not less than 100 per centum resulting from, wounds or injuries received or diseases contracted in, or preexisting injury or disease aggravated by, active service, children of members who are in a “missing status” as defined in section 551(2) of title 37, and children of civilian employees who are in “missing status” as defined in section 5561(5) of title 5. The determination of the Department of Veterans Affairs as to service connection of the cause of death or disability, and the percentage at which the disability is rated, is binding upon the Secretary of the Navy.

(b) In addition there may be appointed each year at the Academy midshipmen as follows:
(1) one hundred selected by the President from the children of members of an armed force who—
(A) are on active duty (other than for training) and who have served continuously on active duty for at least eight years;
(B) are, or who died while they were, retired with pay or granted retired or retainer pay;
(C) are serving as members of reserve components and are credited with at least eight years of service computed under section 12733 of this title; or
(D) would be, or who died while they would have been, entitled to retired pay under chapter 1223 of this title except for not having attained 60 years of age;
however, a person who is eligible for selection under paragraph (1) of subsection (a) may not be selected under this paragraph.

i believe there is no limitation on how many may apply, but a limit on how many may be in attendance at the academy- up to 65. class of 2023 had 77 nominations in "Children of Deceased/Disabled Vets, POW, MIA" category, where the presidential had 790. the chances are 100 out 790 or 16 out 77.
