Hello, my daughter just got her principal nomination letter, but earlier this week she also got a letter that her medical waiver was denied. She is going to ask to appeal. If she is allowed to appeal, does the fact that she's been denied a waiver mean that her principal nomination will be overridden and the spot given to someone else on the slate during the appeal process?

Thank you for any advice.

I don’t believe the nomination will be taken back... I would recommend you have her reach out to Mr. Mullen’s on this forum... he is DODMERB :) and likely could help her with the medical appeals process...

Her principal nom was given to her by an elected official. Nothing changes that or its significance. The medical waiver process will play out. If she obtains a waiver and is otherwise fully qualified, I believe an appointment would be offered. If the final decision is she is not given a waiver and is inadmissible, Admissions would then proceed to offer the appointment chargeable to the elected official to someone else.

This is why some slates don’t resolve until well into the spring.

Your DD can contact Mr. Mullen (his contact info is all over the DoDMERB forum). He offers to privately discuss the process over phone or email with applicants. @MullenLE

Actually the letter she got says that her medical waiver was denied by the Air Force? So she's inadmissible, I guess?

Mr. Mullen is the absolute best. If there can be a waiver appeal for her situation, he will guide her.

My son received a nomination, will the letter state if he was the "principal" nomination ?

That depends on the MOC's methods. There is not a standard or "playbook" for this. Some don't send letters at all, just notify the academies of their nominees.

My DS received a phone call from our MoC that he received a principal nomination followed by an email with a formal letter stating she "submitted a principal nomination on your behalf." A few days later his portal was updated to show he received a nomination but do not believe it specifically state it was a principal nomination.

It definitely varies by MOC. Our experience here was that the principal nominee received a phone call and was told they were the principal. Everyone else just received a letter that didn’t say either way. We only know that our MOC designates a principal because my son happened to know and speak to the student who got that nom. You can definitely call the office and ask.

My son was told during plebe year he was principal nom by someone connected to MOC.

We have no reason to believe or disbelieve it. We had no indication beforehand that was true.

Or you can definitely not call and ask. IMO, if they wanted you to know, they would tell you. There is a reason they didn’t publish. So if you do call, be prepared to be told “we don’t disclose that”, or similar.

The MOC process is separate from the admissions process. True, it operates within guidelines, but they can their process however they want, within guidelines. And they can do it differently from year to year.

MOC’s send a list of who they want considered for their spot. SA’s determine if the people on the list are qualified, and then of the qualified people, who they want to offer the appointment to.

Eh. The worst the office can do is say no. Calling won’t hurt anybody.
Agreed. In our experience, offices (both congressional and admissions) have been very forthcoming on the phone. If they don’t want to tell you, they obviously won’t.

One thing I would tell the person who originally asked is that you may be better off (mentally) not knowing or just assuming that you are the principal! What’s done on that front is done and better to worry about what you can control!
