My DS just received a call from our representative that he received a principal nomination. She said it may take a few days to appear in his portal but sent him an email confirming it is a "principal" nomination. He is scheduled to interview with our senator interview tomorrow. Does he still need to interview or should he contact them to withdraw? His application is complete so does this mean he will receive an appointment?

Congratulations to your Son! I think I have seen other posts that say he should still interview and not put "all his eggs in one basket", so to speak.
I'm sure other posters will comment.

What state are you in?

The most important question first - the principal nomination requires USMA and USAFA to offer an appointment (USNA is not absolutely required to, slightly different legal language, but will generally do so) to the applicant IF the applicant is found fully qualified by the SA. It essentially takes the comparative evaluation and ranking of the candidates out of the SA’s hands and forces them to make a certain choice. If your son is found fully qualified, as a principal nominee, he will receive an offer.

I recommend continuing with all interviews. The SAs all recommend applying for as many noms as possible, with no asterisked comment to “stop applying if you get a principal.” The elected officials may collaborate, and the senator may decide to not include your son on his or her slate.

Your son should also continue to work alternative plans, should something occur to derail him from reporting to the SA this summer.

He can exhale a bit!

Thank you. Based on these comments, he will proceed with interviews while he waits for official word on appointment.

Is there a way to tell 3Q on the portal? His shows Medical Status: Qualified and his CFA has a checkmark. Academics and leadership are his strongest area but not sure how to tell in the portal if he officially "qualified" on that front.

Relying on what I have read here over the years, only USMA informs an applicant if they are fully qualified. Other SAs may show application is complete, but not whether the candidate is considered fully qualified.

Given your comments and depending on how he stacks up against stats of other classes, you can probably extrapolate whether he is qualified academically.

Good luck.

His portal updated last week with the principal nomination and changed to "Complete Pending Review." Any input on how long others in the same situation had to wait to hear? Will it be March or did anyone hear back sooner?

The offer of Appointment could come at anytime.
This year has been like no other. Just be patient and continue to work on Plan B, because you never know!
DS had a P NOM for USMA. We had the same questions. We compared his stats to the “average “ listed by other appointees and what USMA posted on their website. His application had been completed, passed DODMERB , CFA looked fine, etc...We “assumed “ him to be 3Q, held our breath and waited. Remember, with a P NOM, the Candidate must only pass minimum standards to receive an appointment. So don’t overthink the numbers. The fact that a Candidate received a P NOM should reflect an already outstanding Candidate . DODMERB and CFA are typically the hurdles they may need to overcome more so than Academics and Leadership to gain an appointment based on the MOC panels vetting.
Once you get the offer of Appointment, exhaleenjoy the moment, and take another deep breath. Make it a good breath, because you will be holding it until R Day!
Best of luck!

Continue diligently with all paths until appointment is actually offered and accepted. Too many gremlins can upset the process - doesn't pay too cutoff other opportunities.

Picking what number a roulette wheel will stop on is easier than predicting the timing of appointments - keep checking portal, make sure green checks stay green, and be patient.

Last year, it took about a month from principal nomination to letter offering appointment with USNA.

Wanted to close the loop for any future searchers. DS did proceed with senatorial interviews during which he informed the selection boards of his principal nom. They were very positive and thankful for the information as they like to "spread the wealth" to allow as many nomination as possible.

As far as timing, similar to @Mama-B it was one month from when he received the principal nomination to when he received his USAFA appointment - which he has accepted. To say we are proud is an understatement. Thanks again to everyone here for the help and information along the way.

Good luck to all those waiting!

He should NOT withdraw any nomination applications. Congratulations. If triple qualified, he will receive an appointment.
what is triple qualified? my kid has 4 nom. to USNA and 2 to USAFA and 1 to USMA....
