What is the process a Midshipman has to go through to commission active duty? I realize that AD is by choice and not mandatory. Is it relatively easy to get an AD billet in the Navy or Coast Guard?

First, you need to develop a strong relationship with the liaison for whatever branch you would like to serve, I'm assuming Navy, and focus on PT scores and academics. You will also need to keep a clean disciplinary record. You apply for your AD slot your junior year. I think you find out first tri senior year

The realtive easiness or difficulty of obtaining an AD slot will vary from year to year. How many each service commssions each year changes as does how many are commissioned into each Designator/MOS as does which commissioning source is alloted how many slots.

I can say that I've never heard of anyone getting denied (although I'm sure it has happened) even those with less than stellar records.
