Process question: When does a cadet have to vacate his/her room after the semester ends?

After the semester ends, cadets may have to move to different rooms and also get new roommate(s). After one completes their term-end exams, how many days does a cadet have to get all their stuff in order, moved out, and stored? So, for example, this year the Fall 2024 the last day of classes appears to be December 20, 2024, with some final projects due on Saturday, December 21, 2024. So by what day, do cadets needs to be fully vacated? Does each cadet move all of their stuff, or is there a team assigned to do this?

Cadets are required to return on Sunday, January 5, 2025. There is a reorganization day on Monday, January 6, 2025 and the 1st day of classes is on Tuesday, January 7, 2025. I assume cadets will know their room assignments prior to arriving back to campus, how does this work?

Also for the end of the Spring semester, do cadets get more time to move out after classes and exams are over due to graduation attendance requirements?

The basic answer is no. You will have to be out of your room before you leave for Christmas Break. Their is no one assigned to do this but your classmates will help. Same thing in the summer, you will need to be out of your room by graduation day. If for some reason you are not leaving, you would stay in a different barracks for that short time.

Echo, you will never be part of or fully understand the moving/vacating process or the great mystery known as the Trunk Room --it is like Aladdin's Cave with the detritus of the Long Gray Line. Your cadet will learn what to do and have sufficient time to do it --along with everyone else. It is really different from other experiences (if you went to college or if your other kids went to college). However, for your planning purposes, your cadet can also leave after his or her last exam. Most plebe classes get the long straw and have the latest exam possible. However, for winter, your kid should have the TEE schedule already now that the term has started. Also, there will be buses organized to the major NYC airports (for Thanksgiving and for Christmas break) and if you live in the MD-DC-VA area or along the I-95 corridor, the MDDCVA Parents Club offers buses from campus to five stops from the Delaware Rest Stop to Fredericksburg, VA.

Also, I do not know if you are a mom or a dad of your cadet...if you are a Mom, please join the WP Moms page--where you can ask these questions and also get tons of information. There is also a West Point Dads page. (If you run into trouble joining the WP Moms page, please send me a message here so I can be looking out for you....you have to answer all of the questions.)

Not sure where this question is coming from either, but it sounds like you are a parent and want to know what to do at the end of the semester. USMA is not like a usual college in that sense. The cadets will take care of everything as far as moving rooms. The parents don’t have anything to do with it, except maybe to help when they move their stuff out after they graduate at the end of their firstie year.

Thanks DrMom, for your answer. Lots of good info. Was trying to figure out whether I could purchase transportation a day or two after the end of term-end exams. Also, it seems that they have their syllabi, but the exact term exam dates are not clear. I was hoping the dates would be, but alas they are not. Additionally, with all of the delays and hassles of the mass migration; personally I was okay with waiting until the following morning or a day to have a more relaxed and rested travel day.

Once your cadet gets through this first year, one of the great gifts you can give is coaching on how to manage, schedule, research, plan for unexpected obstacles, build in safety margin for travel and stuff transportation. Turn it all over to him or her after this first year. Military people become experts at planning and executing travel, household goods moves, etc. Great place to start on a small scale is the SA. You can still be the bank. Gets you out of the loop. He or she is accountable for being at the right place at the right time in the right uniform and with the right gear as an adult on active duty.

If you are purchasing airline tickets for the end of the semester, just wait until they have their TEE schedule. You will know in plenty of time to purchase tickets. Generally speaking, cadets are moving themselves out of their rooms during the course of TEE week. Usually by the time a cadet has his or her last TEE, they have moved most of their stuff out of their room to the trunk room and will likely only have a few things left to get out. Most cadets are moved out and ready to go the same day if their last TEE is in the morning and the next morning if their last TEE is in the evening.

This is exactly what our son did. Little trips to the trunk room, then after last TEE he was out. A couple times his sponsor would take him to Garrison and he would train down to the airport. Its pretty easy to do, and they get good at navigating the trains and such.

He will want to leave that night.

Totally agree, I am only planning on doing this for the Winter Holiday. She has never traveled alone before, so I am trying to show her at least once before then how to use the buses, trains, etc.

Thanks for that; things are more clear now.
