My son was just awarded a Project Go scholarship to study Russian in either Estonia or Kyrgyzstan this summer. They are making it very clear anything could happen and they should be prepared to shift to an online program. Does any have any experience with the Project Go online programs of the past two summers?

He's looking ahead at the CLS program also so any advice or experience with the application process would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Yes, my son did the online Russian program 2 years ago when Covid cancelled all travel. It wasn’t as good as an immersive program would have been but he and the other 3or 4 taking it with him did very well and all passed the tests for the required intermediate level in the 8 or so weeks. However, it was a lot of work and time. Classes went all day and then he had to study and do homework all night so he had very little, if any, free time.

My DS is a Russian major. He put off attempting Project Go for this year due to the potential for it going virtual instead of going to Estonia/Kyrgystan. Do you think your son would recommend the summer abroad or a semester abroad?

My DD just submitted for summer domestic for Russian. She didn't want to try for abroad with all the upheaval right now and was afraid it would be changed to domestic or virtual anyway.

Congrats! And thanks for hte info on the CLS program. We weren't aware of that so my DD can look into that next year.

My DD wants to do a semester abroad but with ROTC, it's really hard to coordinate it. Her Detachment said that the best time to try is fall of junior year....

Congrats! My oldest son did each of those Project Go trips in those two countries. Both were great trips - very rewarding culturally and for learning Russian (he was a majoring in Russian and IR). But the ability to travel during the program was enlightening and a great experience helping him learn new things and be open to other cultures and ideas. Plus he tacked on trips to Europe either before or after the Project Go dates. I hope he gets it. One tip, encourage him to take advantage of the free time during the program dates to go on trips and explore. My son had a couple of classmates who just stayed in the hotel and host city.
As for prepping for the trip, not much is needed. Our phone plan offered unlimited international texts and we were able to Facetime him when he had wifi. There are ATMs over there for cash.

DS only applied for one program (in Kyrgyzstan) and got it. Yippee! Maybe I’m ignorant, but I’m not concerned about it cancelling. COVID seems to be under control there, having already been hit by Omicron, and there doesn’t seem to be any security issues either. https://www.reuters.com/business/he...st-cases-omicron-covid-19-variant-2022-01-12/
Congratulations to your son!!!!! If mine choses Kyrgyzstan over Estonia I'll let you know. We can connect them ahead of time. Honestly, I think they'll go, too. Fingers crossed.

My DS got the word that they would allow him to study abroad but only one semester and no travel to Russia. As his school's programs for Russian were all full year in Moscow they became a no go anyhow.

Yeah, trying to arrange will be a nightmare but she has to wait till junior year in the hopes she gets selected for field training next summer first…

My DD was just advised that she was awarded a ProjectGo scholy for this summer in Taiwan (Mandarin Chinese). Very excited and trying to see what summer cruise training fits that schedule.

So, which did he decide on, Kyrgyzstan or Estonia? So exciting!

He went with Estonia (we have friends in Stockholm and distant family in Lithuania which might have influenced him) Although I bet I'll have to eat my words. After last night's events I find it hard to believe DOD will let MIDS travel that close to the Russian boarder. The program is in far eastern city of Narva and sits on the boarder. I hope I'm wrong.

I was just thinking of this post this morning after the news. Keep us all informed if anything changes!

DoD coordinates closely with DoS. Non-essential travel will be the first cut of the security risk is deemed sufficient. SA Midshipmen and cadets are not Joe/Jane Average College Kids but AD military, and ROTC also have military status.

Yikes! I’m wondering the same thing. I sure hope it still goes! :(

It is unfortunate that Russian study programs are jeopardized by current events :-( I hope this will be over soon and your son can participate in his chosen program!
A question: do they have to have a good knowledge of Russian to be eligible for these language programs? My son took Russian in high school but nowhere near a good command of the language yet.
Thank you!

Project Go looks for an interest in the language and culture. My middle one was accepted into an Arabic program without having taken the language.

It is based on what year they need. Year 1 would be little to no skill in that language and up the ladder. Do you know what year he applied for?
