ProjectGo - anybody have experience?

Kid just got accepted to Morocco program and waitlisted for Oman......anybody with knowledge of these programs?

Thanks!
My daughter had a fantastic experience in Morocco. In addition to the language education, the cultural education was a plus. Students did weekend trips on their own to various spots in the country. It was a great learning experience for the students to find spots to stay, plan the trip, and then navigate the places they visited. They weren't allowed to visit other countries though.

Looked at the website and it seemed like an amazing opportunity.

I don’t know how competitive these opportunities are but there is no better way to learn a language than full immersion. As a Spanish teacher, the daily 23 hours out of Spanish class takes a toll on whatever learning took place during the hour I get the kiddos daily. If the daughter ends up going the NROTC route I will prod her to look in to something like this.

Anyone in ROTC now not trying to do this is nuts! I hope the various ROTC schools push this on their future officers aggressively.

Apparently they have become more competitive this year, maybe because CULP is no longer an option, so extra congrats to all who got in. I am hearing about kids with 4.0 gpa and maxed out APFT scores who were not even waitlisted for the international programs. I realize a lot more goes into the decisions than that, (much like the ROTC scholarship program) but it is surprising. The domestic program acceptances still haven't been released, and I don’t know how competitive they will be.

GPA yes; APFT scores perhaps not so much. From their website:

Scholarship recipients will be selected on the basis of merit. Review panels will consider the following criteria:
· Academic merit
· Language experience
· Cultural sensitivity
· Leadership
· Commitment to Project GO mission
· Diversity

Yes, and at least 2 recommendation letters are needed and you never know what is said in those.

They've always been competitive since my youngest applied to his first one 3 years ago - he was turned down for 2 of the 3 options he requested. He also knew of kids not selected.
By the way, the programs are the equivalent of a year's language study at school. My son went to Project Go having done Russian 1 at school and then went into Russian 3 after his summer experience.

DS will also go to Taiwan. Very excited for him! He sent me a screen capture of the service agreement he had to acccept. The value of the scholarship is almost 13k and there is clear language that some or all must be paid back for failure to comply with program rules. Glad they make that clear up front. Good luck to all who are hopeful. What a cool opportunity for these young men and women.

He’s accepted for the Texas A&M Rabat location.
I'm pretty sure that was where my daughter was. It was a fantastic experience, and there were organized excursions as well as many that the kids put together themselves (airbnb in Morocco lists hostels which were clean and cheap). Don't let your son pass up this opportunity for language, cultural and personal growth. It's a great experience overall.

Thanks.

Hopefully these won’t all be canceled. Has anyone heard anything? My DS was accepted to a domestic program, so I’m guessing it will be a school by school decision.

No cancelled yet! But not hopeful.

What are the dates?

I know the feeling. My DS was slated for Kazan, Russia. Last minute it was cancelled. After several weeks of waiting it was switched to Kiev, Ukraine.

I fancy myself an amateur epidemiologist, so I would say the Covid-19 virus hates heat. I‘m also an amateur meteorologist and Morocco looks hotter than he// to me.

Good luck!

He accepted May 31 in KS. But it’s after the acceptance date and he and a couple friends didn’t hear anything from UNG so I was wondering if that has been cancelled. Glad to hear they switched your program and haven’t cancelled altogether.

They're allowed to go to Russia now? That was off limits as a of a coupe of years ago.

My apologies.

My son was there 6 yrs ago.

I wish both of your kids a favorable outcome.
