My son is Marine Option at Wisconsin and has applied for a ProjectGo scholarship for intense Arabic immersion this Summer in the Middle East. Has anyone had experience with these programs?

My son studied Russian in Ukraine. Excellent experience other than sketchy host family. In order to have the most beneficial experience, he should have a wingman who is serious about learning the language. Running in a pack of English speakers will slow down his progress.

Congratulations and Best of luck!

What country?

Oman, Jordan or Morocco

That's great! Each one has its own unique character and history.

My son went to Estonia and Kyrgyzstan for Russian and my daughter went to Morrocco for Arabic. These were great experiences! This is an excellent program and most spots allow for some weekend travel to help expand cadets' cultural experiences. Tell your son to take advantage of Project Go as many summers as he can.

Which program in Morocco did your daughter attend? Thanks for your reply.

Looked at the website and it seemed like an amazing opportunity.

I don’t know how competitive these opportunities are but there is no better way to learn a language than full immersion. As a Spanish teacher, the daily 23 hours out of Spanish class takes a toll on whatever learning took place during the hour I get the kiddos daily. If the daughter ends up going the NROTC route I will prod her to look in to something like this.

Anyone in ROTC now not trying to do this is nuts! I hope the various ROTC schools push this on their future officers aggressively.

I believe the acceptances for the international spots come out tomorrow

It is definitely less competitive than one would expect, which is good for those who wish to take advantage of the opportunity.

My DS's AROTC battalion definitely didn't push it and I don't know why. All I can say is that real Army cares about it, paying language bonuses to AD personnel as well as to Cadets/Mids. In a competitive environment like the US military, a good solid language facility is an excellent differentiator.

that’s good but surprising. I heard it is competitive and GPA is a big factor. Im guessing that because it is a lot of work and the expectation is that you will commit to studying the language throughout college, as well as the fact that the summer sessions can conflict with other training opportunities, may make it less desirable for many cadets.

Does NROTC pay language bonuses while in school?
My DS, AROTC, received them And has received them during his time Active Duty.

My son, who attends an SMC that hosts several Project Go trips, applied to other school's program as well as his own.
He did not get one from his school, but got one from a different SMC.
His own school gave him a small stipend to defer the out of pocket expenses.
He had a great experience, made new friends he will probably be crossing paths with after commissioning, cost him nothing, ended up with cash left over in his pocket.

The short answer is no, with an exception outlined in the OPNAVINST 7220.7H:

(2) Reserve Officers Training Corps midshipmen may be eligible for FLPB if they are participants in an enlisted to officer commissioning program, continue to receive full pay and allowances for their enlisted paygrade, and meet all other eligibility requirements for FLPB outlined in this instruction.
