While I am aiming for USAFA, I want to try to open more opportunities for myself so I am considering applying to the Coast Guard Academy as well. For eligibility, I qualify for everything except "no financial debt"... I have a car loan and federal loan that are just some months from being paid off, but I also have a private loan that will hardly be touched within the next year or so. Loans have been my only way to get through school. Now I have made the choice to take a few classes at a time and pay out of pocket. Is it worth my time applying or will I likely be turned down for ineligibility? I'm sure the answer to my question is common sense, but I would rather have a confirmation.

I came in with student debt, and cleared it as quickly as possible, but I don't think it ever came up, and if it did it certainly wasn't an issue.. Most of it was able to be put into forbearance, although one company made it a real pain. I put most of mine there, and paid it down/off as I could, but as quickly as possible. When you say private, you mean a private student loan, not a personal loan, I assume? Also, if you get in, it will be at least three years before you can drive that car again, so you could sell, pay off the rest of your car, and pay off/down some of the other loans.
