This is my first post but I have been reading and learning a lot from this forum for several months. My daughter will be a swab this summer and we are sorting through what she can bring etc. I was wondering if they are allowed to have digital phot frames for their 4X6 frame. Thanks!

All I remember hearing is that they have a drawer the size of a shoe box for personnal stuff. I guess they mostly shove food in there like power bars, gatorade mix, etc. But I don't see why you couldn't put a small picture frame in there if they don't want it sitting out. -officer

Welcome to the forum Cindyc!! I know I perused this forum for several months before posting too! Glad to have you aboard and maybe our daughters will get to know one another this summer at CGA.
I remember watching a video about the Coast Guard Academy where they showed a "personal shelf" that each cadet could decorate with their own stuff. They even suggested that unusual stuff on the shelf might detract the cadre's attention from the room inspection itself. I'm not sure whether they get to decorate it during Swab Summer or if that is for after classes begin in the fall though.

Yes, she CAN bring it, the better question is, SHOULD she bring it.

Since they will be changing rooms (grabbing stuff and quickly moving) twice during Swab Summer, I would hold off on the electronic picture frame until school starts, less chance of it breaking.

for swab summer i'm pretty sure you will not be able to have a digital picture frame. a regular picture frame should probably fine, but i'd check with the academy on that since rules tend to change from year to year. once the school year starts things change quite a bit and the frame will be fine.

I wouldn't bring it, but mail it after Swab Summer. They move rooms, and the less you have to move (and break) the better.

A plastic picture cube is a nice compromise for her to use until the end of Swab summer. The cube did not cause our Cadet any added grief.

That's what I had too (no digital frames then). Not likely to break, and nice pictures to look at. Don't include any incriminating pictures...nothing involving your son and a bunny suit.

picture cube

The nice thing about a picture cube is pictures can and need to be replaced.

Just an idea........Keep a stockpile of pictures at home. Let them take a cube on R-Day, then commit yourself to sending a letter every day or two with a new picture enclosed. It will make you write, and they will appreciate the letter and the picture. Not as automatic as a picture frame, but in the end, they will appreciate the daily letter/picture more.

An as added FYI -

These are not "dorm rooms." Chase Hall serves as the barracks for about 1,000 cadets / swabs.

They are the cleanest, most spartan living accommodations your kid has ever occupied. "Correctional Institute Modern" is the design style.

Parent's get 2 chances per year to go inside Chase Hall - the day before R-Day and the Friday of Parent's Weekend - don't miss it.

Chase Hall rooms are pretty spacious as well...I always liked the set up.
