If someone in my district had already received an appointment, is it possible at all to still get an appointment?

Yes, as long as you are 3Q, you can still be put on the NWL (National Wait List) or they might even "find" you a slate to win. Though this is just what I've heard (for the "finding" portion). As Peter said, until you officially get told no keep hoping. I might very well be in the same boat as you. I just don't know if my slate was taken or not. Let's keep our heads up and keep pushing on.

It might be helpful to go re-read the Sticky at the top of the Nominations forum. There are different kinds of noms, and where an appointment gets charged to is not always obvious. The person in your District may have had a Presidential or JROTC nom, and the appointment was charged there. The SA will charge 1 appointment off the slate to the MOC, but can then take other fully qualified applicants off that slate according to established guidelines. Those appointments get charged to another nom authority.

Sorry, new to this. Only 1 potential candidate in each district can be selected for an appointment? If there are more than 1 person who received a nomination from a specific district, only 1 of them could be offered an appointment? I apologize if I read the original question wrong. Thank you!

Same advice to you. Go read the Sticky at the top of the Nominations forum. In any geographical District, several people could get offered appointments, with those appointments CHARGED to different nomination authorities.

@Capt MJ is explaining it perfectly. They can shuffle around who gets appointed using what nomination source to accommodate the most qualified applicants possible

It’s confusing in the beginning, but not so after you familiarize yourself with the process. Via the nomination forum, as suggested. Spend some time delving into that and you’ll get it.

Tons of discussion over there. Most of y’all’s questions have been asked, and there is lots of info available. You can also search your question via the search function here (or Google) to bring you to pertinent info.

Good luck, and welcome, new members!

To calm your fears - I have had 5 students from the same high school receive USAFA Appointments in the same admissions cycle. Don't sweat the math - there are too many variables and options to concern yourself with. Focus on the parts you control.

Thank you!! I cannot be anxious or wrap myself up into this as it is probably been one of the most out of my comfort zone process. My son has worked his tail off to complete the application process, secure a nomination, being a man any mother would be proud to call her own, and has secured an amazing back up plan, so I will just patiently await the outcome. :) It is easy to become wrapped up into this and worry when its now in the past.

Either way, i am beyond proud of the young man who has given the best of himself to this process. I do appreciate all that take the time to help us moms through this. Good luck everyone!!!!!

Does anyone know the probability of receiving an appointment after the "big wave?" I know that may be a very loaded question, but if anyone has any insight it would be appreciated. I am hoping for the best, looking hard into plan B, and holding onto hope until it's official with a TWE.

No. We don't know the amount offered as of today, nor do we know the amount accepted or how many total they are seeking to fill the class. If you want to prognosticate, look at last year's appointment thread and interpret what you can from prior cycles.

@shiner this is just a question to get off my mind. But you mentioned that the remaining spots are filled by WCS score? If I feel like I have a high WCS score is there a better chance I might get in, or is there really no way in knowing.

No way of knowing - and admittedly, this is the worst part because you send things into the black hole and wait. You know your data that went into the machine, but have no visibility of what that translated into for a WCS. I still look at the published data - you can find similar for most class years, but google serves this one up easiest for me - https://www.usafa.edu/app/uploads/Grad_Class_Profile_2019.pdf

For the class of 2019 - 2,528 applicants were deemed qualified. Of those 61.6% received offers of appointment.

Is there anything we can take away from that? I am sure you can find an angle that fits any narrative. Some on SAF have reported that this admission cycle has had fewer applicants - does that mean the "chances" are higher than ~62%?

My personality looks at things like a competition. If I was in a room of candidates with similar backgrounds and skills, do I think I could beat out 4 candidates out of 10?
