Questions for a Freshman Cadet

I have already received my BFE. I might get a C in Latin 4 this year. Will this jeopardize my acceptance into the Academy? This will be the first grade lower than a B- on my transcript.

You'll be fine unless you fail like 3 classes.

Grades -
You'll be fine. I had the same thing happen to me and I still got in!!

Female Shirts -
Get AT LEAST one size larger than normal!!!!!!!!!!!!! Female Physical Conditioning shirts (fitted t-shirts) are VERY tight! Neck hole, arm holes, shoulders, everything.
Normally i wear a size small in normal average t-shirts, I got medium PC shirts and they're sooo tight! next time i get some i'm getting large and they'll still fit tighter than normal tshirts!!

This is going to sound really petty, but are there limits to a Freshman's internet access?

I guess what I'm really getting at is, do freshman cadets have facebook access?

You are allowed Facebook, however MySpace is blocked, but that is wing wide. You are not allowed to watch videos or listen to music so that means no YouTube or Pandora. I understand your question because I know USCGA does not allow freshman Facebook, but dont be the cadet that tries to find the loophole for everything. I had a kid in my basic squadron that was consistently asking whether he could do certain things that he knew freshman cannot do, and it got old for both the cadre and my fellow basic cadets. Once the school year starts, you will find ways around things. Just remember, work smarter, not harder.

Alright, thanks Rage14. My main concern was simply contact back home, and...seeing that now, the only way I could even keep in touch with my civilian friends would be through facebook and aim/gmail

Oh yeah you will be fine with that. some squads allow you a webcam so you can skype. the thing is though that you have to download it off base because you cannot get it through the USAFA internet block. That is a great way to keep up with your buddies back home.

This may sound like an odd question, but I am hoping that someone might be able to answer this. My DS is a musician - plays the trumpet and piano as a form of recreation. There is never a night that he does not play after homework or sports. At the AFA, as a rook, I can only assume that cadets will not have any time to do such things and any sort of keyboard (even the small rolled up ones) would be considered contraband. Any guidance on this?

Thank you to every cadet who contributes to this forum. This is really excellent information.

Musical instruments are allowed, although storage can be an issue in some cases. No baby grands in cadet rooms!

"Rook?"

A Rook is what freshmen are referred to at Norwich...the equivalence of a doolie or swab here at USCGA. I think the poster just had the terms confused.

And yep, 4/c here cannot have FB at USCGA. The few times I have had it here at the Academy (Leaves, 100th Day), I have realized how much of a distraction it is and I appreciate that we are not allowed to use it. Although it is harder to maintain contact with the outside world.

As for instruments - my roomate has a full keyboard with a stand and petal and everything. she keeps it folded on the top shelf of her desk. As long as you could fit it on your desk, in your trunk or drawer, you can bring it. If youre part of the usafa band, they have separate storage for all their instruments in Fairchild. You can play whenever you want but you have to be considerate of the people around you. My roomie has headphones that plug into her keyboard so she's able to play and i'm able to study. If your instrument doesn't have that capability, you can always play in your squadron's SAR - like a common room.

What are you doing in the USAFA forum track?

Honestly, I probably won't even use FB much after we get it back...there's no time for it. If any of you attend any SA you'll realize how much of a valuable thing time is.

Jezzie, I sent you a PM.

using facebook really comes down to time management, just like everything else. if you're constantly on it harvesting crops on farmville and stalking every person you've ever met, then ya, it's bad. if you occasioanlly check it to post pics of life and say hey to old friends, its no problem. same with this site. it's great to have cadets post, but if they do this instead of hw during ACQ all the time, it can be problematic. pretty much the same with anything

I agree with eagle36 - it all comes down to how you use your time at USAFA. Most students who are on Academic Probation are in that situation because they didn't use their time wisely. There's too many resources and tutoring opportunities to not get the help you need.

:bump8ls:

I noticed a few appointees for 2015 who are new to the forums, so I thought I'd bump this back to the first page. It has a lot of good questions and answers

Thanks Ry. I totally forgot about this page haha

So after we get our appointment, what do we do? or...what should we do to best prepare for I (R?) day?

What do we pack and bring to the Academy as well?
