It’s a lot. This is a sample from a few years ago.

Do the swabs get backpacks or duffles for their items over swab summer or should we make sure they have them?

For Day 1, they need to have some sort of backpack or duffle (preferably one that could be worn as a backpack) that can be easily carried/worn. However, it doesn't need to be anything special because they will be issued a seabag and a regular backpack. You do NOT want to send them with just a box or a suitcase. It needs to be something that is easy to handle and will preferably keep their hands free.

Thank you!

Don't spend a lot of money on it because they'll get a fine backpack issued (which is what my DD uses) and the one you send may or may not ever get much use. I mean if you like it it could evetually, but it'll be relegated to the box of personal stuff almost imediately.

Is the backpack they got at AIM big enough?
Yes, that should be fine. It is just used to carry the items they packed so you can check the size now with their required items! I saw all shapes and sizes on that first day. They are literally issued a new bag that morning and the bag they brought is put in storage for the summer.

I know there is concern about what to bring, as this is one of the last things you can do as a parent to help your child before he leaves home to report to military training. And you want to be a good parent. No matter what exactly they bring and don't bring, they will let them in the gate and take care of them to the next evolution. Just follow the list the academy provided and instead of searching the tri-state are for socks or whatever, go spend some time with the family and enjoy the time together. 4 years from now, no one will care about the size of your reporting backpack or if you had too many socks.

It will be ok, just trust in the system, follow the instructions, you have each done a great job of raising your kid to get this far and make it through the admissions process, don't forget to take a few hours together and have fun before R-Day.

Good luck!

I've seen videos of reporting in day where some do have luggage versus backpacks. I was planning to have my daughter report in with all her stuff in a carry on size luggage versus backpack because I have a few of them laying around the house and don't mind if we don't get it back.

Now, I'm wondering if that's a bad idea...

I would highly recommend against the luggage. I saw two boys with luggage last year, and I felt so sorry for them. Not only would their hands then be full with pulling luggage, but they will never hear the end of it from the cadre. They also can't move around as quickly if they are carrying luggage versus just having it on their back. Of course, they will make it through the day if you send them with luggage, but they will definitely stand out, and they don't really want to stand out on day one.

Skim this video for what the incoming class is wearing/carrying - though it’s for Class of 2019, I would say it is typical. In one of my corporate roles, I was often at USMA, USCGA, USMMA and USNA for their reporting in/induction days. Recommend against luggage, they have to carry everything.

Yes! I just remember seeing the video of Day 1 (and pictures) of the swabs having to grab their bags off the bus and run! Even though its just for a moment, having something easy to manage is best!

Agreed. One of the biggest reasons to stick to the list is to avoid standing out to the cadre. Even if an item seems like a good idea if it isn’t on the list don’t bring it.
