Quitting Band for other things

Stay in touch with the sailing coach, and we will try to guarantee that you are not in band.

My DS also loved sailing, and that is what he is doing at USMMA. He had been in his school band for over 8 years but, while he liked playing music at school, he never practiced nor wanted to be in a band in college. I firmly believe that if he had been made to be in the USMMA band, he would have quit the school. The college experience he wanted to remember was sailing, not playing music. I fully understand why some students want to be in a band, but, like everything else, it should be a personal choice. If you want to sail rather than be in the band, my advice is to be VERY FIRM that college sailing is your dream.

After reading the replys, I am just shaking my head. I really must ask,
"WHO is supporting and helping the students" ? All I heard was "drop of your kid and let them grow". Well.... that is fine.. but EVERY young man and woman needs support and guidance. After all, they were 16 and 17 when they made the choice to go to KP. I just don't see the support or direction for the students. In my opinion, if your son doesn't want to be in band company I would tell him to speak up. I would love to hear something about policy and direction from the new Admiral at KP. I did have an opportunity to speak with Capt. Johnson in Admissions once and he was very helpful. Maybe it is a place to start.

Not sure if you realize it but this thread was started by norcalmom2014 ~6 months ago and then 5 months ago she basically thanked everyone for their advice and was opting to go with her son's preferences and decisions. Further, several of the original replies did indeed give here and her son advice for where to go and how to get out of band...

Well I'm glad it worked out for her son. No, I didn't realize it was posted several months ago as it just showed up in my feed. My feeling still remains the same; I would like to hear something from the Admiral about policy and I don't think these kids are are given much support or guidance. Sorry I brought something up that was such old news.

As a fellow alum along with Jasperdog I would have to disagree with you. I never once felt that I wasn't being supported or given guidance.

Not sure if you have some example or what "policy" you want the Admiral to speak on, but I don't think the midshipmen are lacking for support or guidance.
