R Day for Class of 2024

It happens kids get cold feet. My sons Rday had a girl who refused to get off the shuttle bus. She and her mom went back to the parking lot and left.

It happens every year, I would venture to say, at all the SAs. One memorable one at USNA was the young man who processed in, got his hair buzzed, then decided “nope, not doing this.”

Does the SA's refill those vacant spots?
If so up to how many days before the final doors shut?

Well, I’ve never heard of a candidate being given an appointment after R-Day. Is the notion in your post OK Boomer that a candidate could be sitting in Highland Falls waiting for a phone call to get over to Ike? That is an interesting thought. The fact is that 2023’s R-Day wasn’t particularly unusual. And, USMA expects some to leave over the course of Beast, whether it is on the first day or later. So, I don’t think USMA is filling the class back up on R-Day or later.

If I’ve got this wrong, I hope one of the extraordinarily knowledgeable moderators will let us know.

The SA has decades of data to predict how many will decline their appointments, not show up to report in, depart over the first summer, attrite over the 4 years for either voluntary or involuntary reasons. They plan for losses. The class size is more of a desired range. Any significant shortfall of the officer crop service-wide in any given year is made up through other accession programs.

No, I was saying that overall authorized force is 4,400 I believe. Conceivably if they have significant losses out of a particular class, they could increase the initial size of the following class to compensate. They may not adjust anything if they are plus or minus a few but was just pointing out the numbers game they could operate within and still stay within the 4,400 mandate

:eek2: I tried to understand this really hard but failed.. wondering how the girl had passed all the procedures including several interviews.

I believe that the girl somehow lost her confidence which is fine then should have notified it to WP before R-Day so that another candidate can get a chance...It's an extremely sad incident since an opportunity was not given to another candidate who was willing to serve the country.

Maybe the girl tried to send a strong message to her parents who forced her to apply???

I learned another lesson from SAF today.

17 people got dismissed that day? Curious to hear the types of things that cause that!

some changed their minds & felt It wasn’t for them, a few were girls who failed the medical test (you can guess), and the rest are reasons of all kinds

Appreciate the info. All this is new to me so learning as I go and there seems to be MUCH to learn.

Looking for a place to stay for our trip to West Point for R day. Do you recommend staying in Newburgh , Fishkill or other location. We are new to West Point and don't want to add to our rookie mistakes!
Any suggestions appreciated.

Close but comfortable is better. It will be a long day for the New Cadet.
Do NOT do what one parent did a few years ago and slip them something to help them sleep. That turned out poorly. They are given a drug test on R-Day or soon after.

I know the area very well since my DH went there eons ago. You can check local hotels (Holiday Inn Express and Thayer) but most have already booked up. AirBNB and HomeAway are good options. There is also https://visitbearmountain.com/. They still have availability and are very reasonable. A good 10-15 minute drive to West Point. Good luck!

Some families come up early, say Thursday/Friday and spend the weekend in NYC. Something like that may keep your son/daughter occupied. Less time to think about R-Day.

I agree. Bear Mountain is not too close, not too far. Places to eat nearby. You can fight the crowd if it's a nice weekend and hike up Bear Mountain. Or, drive over to Garrison and take the train to the City.

So have people just gone ahead and booked a room, hoping that their DS or DD actually gets an appointment? Yet another reason that waiting for the bus stinks!
