What is the route through West Point for becoming an Army Ranger? Is West Point or ROTC a good option for someone who wants to be a Ranger?

The only way to guarantee getting a shot to Regiment is to do Option 40 contract enlistment. Otherwise you can hope to get branched infantry, hope to get assigned to the regiment. Although pretty much all infantry officers at least get the opportunity to earn the tab, but not necessarily wear the scroll.

If you’re talking Ranger Regiment, there’s a number of different MOS’s that can apply. It’s not a first term job coming out of your commissioning source. You can apply for assessment after getting some experience as a LT and have demonstrated good potential for continued high performance. ROTC or West Point can be a good source to come from. It’s more whether you assess into a branch that the MOS holds available positions within Regiment and demonstrate you’re a high performer, then pass the assessment if offered, to be offered a job. Check out here for more: https://www.benning.army.mil/Tenant/75thRanger/Recruiting.html

Typical route coming out of West Point:
1) Branch Infantry
2) Attend Ranger school around same time as IBOLC
3) Be a stud PL/XO
4) Apply as a senior LT for assessment

You can also be Field Artillery or Cyber or MI or AG or a lot of different things but typically it is Infantry officers who have the most opportunity.

Pretty much ANY officer can attend Ranger school and the Ranger Regiment employs almost All Officer MOSes--Infantry being the most common.

Best advice is to decide if ROTC or SA is the best route for you to complete your college education and commission. Once you commission, your route will start become progressively less significant as your ongoing performance becomes much more significant.

Best of Luck!

Yes... thus why I said that the only way to GUARANTEE a shot is to enlist option 40. Any other way is up to chance.

I would respectfully disagree with the comment that "pretty much any officer can attend Ranger school." I would say that is true if you are Infantry or Combat (light) Engineer. There are some limited slots for other Combat Arms branches (like Armor or Infantry). This comment is almost completely untrue for Service Support branches, regardless if you are an officer. If you are going to a SA or ROTC, about the only way to guarantee Ranger Regiment is to branch Infantry, get your Tab, and go to a light Infantry unit.

There is no way to guarantee a chance at RASP out of ROTC or USMA and on paper they will give you the same chance (since it is the same commission). However, specific opportunities at West Point that can better prepare you for any SOF assessment are more prevalent.

- Guaranteed active duty commission (required for 75th)
- Prevalent infantry slots (if you want it you can get it)
- Exposure to SOF officers during Branch Week & throughout the academic year as instructors/TACs
- Post selection to 82nd, 101st, 10th MTN, etc
- Military clubs and teams like Sandhurst Black/Gold and combat weapons that can give you some good prep
- Required classes on physical fitness, sports performance, and nutrition to improve your H2F

You will have chances to network and learn from many who have gone through this process. I don't know of other places where you can just go up to a LTC with a scroll and ask him/her about their experiences casually.

Right now Ranger school is very competitive as they are backed up. Even some infantry LTs are having a tough time getting slots. FA, EN, AR, maybe.
Of course, this can change next week.

Maybe Ranger School is backed up because they are letting so many can go and give it a shot. Just judging from Ranger School Graduation in June 2021.

Let's make sure we are differentiating between securing a spot at Ranger School, earning a Ranger Tab vs. earning a spot in the Ranger Regiment of which the Tab is prerequisite. That is where the competition is very stiff. Army Ranger is not an MOS. There is a variety of MOSes in Ranger Regiment, including support MOSes.

There's a significant number of holders of the Tab who are not and never were members of the Regiment, including the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs and my DS who started life as a 25A, about as support as one can get. He has made a career of being misunderestimated by those who think that certain MOSes automatically enhance advancement.

My whole point is, OP does not need to start out his/her military life thinking that certain MOSes preclude advancement to a challenging career. That cuts both ways. If OP aspires to Infantry, he/she is entitled to nothing. If OP aspires to Signal Corps and has the desire and work ethic, he/she won't be denied.

Your point is taken. And more power to any Signal Officer who aspires to Regiment. Not saying it cannot happen. I was sharing from my personal perspective as an Infantry Officer who earned the Tab but never served in Regiment. In my time in the Army, I never met a Signal Officer with the Tab. Doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I was simply responding to the assertion that pretty much any officer can go to Ranger school. That is simply not true.

Congratulations! The Ranger Tab is no small achievement. DS said its the hardest thing he ever did or will have ever done. He certainly felt as though the 11As and all the Combat Arms had an advantage based on their training, but that training by itself was not a guarantor of success.

My son 's path via AROTC and Signal Corps has not been normal, but is a case study in not letting oneself get pigeon holed.

Best of Luck going forward.

I am certainly impressed if your son is a Tabbed Signal Officer. That probably puts him in very small, rare company. Frankly, I have a close friend who was an Armor officer who was Tabbed and even that was rare. From that point, the path into Regiment is much more difficult. Priority typically goes to Infantry officers because of the nature of the branch in relation to the Regiment.

Just ask the Russians. If the coms don’t work or are compromised, then…we’ll you know the rest of the story.
