I have asked previously if, this close to April 1, I should be preparing myself for good or bad news. Has anyone heard of anyone RD who has already received a hard no? Not sure if the totality of the "no batch" will be on March 31 or April 1. SO scared, but still holding onto hope for the best.

Following. I would really like to know if 'no's are flowing.

You always need to be prepared for whatever may be thrown at you. This is no different! Hope for the best, but have a solid plan B and C. As far as admissions, this week is just as valid as any other week! Also, I'm sure they'll more than likely be working on this through the Monday deadline of April 1.

Not to add to your anxiety, but in years past, it seems there are inevitably instances where the decision date comes and goes and there are still applicants who haven't gotten word. Not saying it happens to many or will happen to you, but it does happen.

Also know that one of the mantras we hear all the time from CGA admissions is they love people who love the Coast Guard! So if you don't get the news you want, and this is your dream, prepare to apply again next year and even the year after that if it's what you want. Captain Fredie always tells his story of how he applied I believe twice and was rejected, and then the third attempt he received a CGAS appointment. It took him 3 extra years to get where he wanted to be, but look at him now!

The wait is hard. Good luck and hang in there!

Some years near the deadline Admissions will call a limited number of people on the wait list or who have not received word yet and ask them if they would like to remain on the wait list, and also to gauge the likelihood they would accept a late offer. There are sometimes a few May or even June openings and they want to be able to til them quickly. We're talking a couple spots, so this isn't so much an option as a lottery ticket, but it does happen.

You're not done til you're done and it's still March, but once the wave of TWEs go out it's largely time to embrace plan B or C.

Thank you. What does TWE stand for?

Yes, in Bear's Den plus i think an email. My DD got her call on March 27, so that's the only direct experience I've got.

Also, a lot of this parlance dates back years, which is why you still read about the BFE ( big envelope) even though it's often a fed ex or dhl package containing a folder that isn't white.

My DS was on the waitlist last year and did not get called. Found out after it was over that they called 40ish from the waitlist but there were 400 on it. Captain Freedie offered to meet with anyone on the waitlist who didn’t get in, to go over their application and he got good feedback. He was able to reapply EA this year and got in. If it’s what you really want, they love reapplicants!

Awesome story. Do you mind sharing what actins your DS took in his extra year to improve his candidacy on reapplication and address any Fredie feedback? Also, any pointers from your end for those who wind up in a similar position?

I thought i read reapplicants were not permitted to EA re-apply (but maybe waitlisters are)? My assumption was that EA did now allow sufficient to address and improve from in 6 months versus a full year.

Probably because we're looking for any glimmer of info at this point....is it ridiculous to think that at this point if you haven't been cut they want you but there are limited bearths so when all the seats are taken you go to the Wait List? Will they tell you what number you are on the wait list? I'm glad your DS persevered and was successful the 2nd time. Takes courage to keep after it.

If they get on the waitlist but do not receive an appointment, they’re allowed to reapply EA.

He had planned to attend MMI but Captain Freedie said his academics were strong enough that it would be better to save his money and go to another school he got into and take “move forward” in his academics by taking Calculus 2 & 3 and Chemistry 2 and maybe physics. He got into our local polytechnic school in Oregon so he was able to stay home and commute to do that.

Other feedback he got was to rewrite some essays with more diverse experiences reflected. He is an Eagle Scout so a number of his essays talked about scouting experiences so he said they wanted to see more variety in his experiences and learning from them. His main tip was to apple EA. His application was strong enough to get in but he had decided late to apply and didn’t get it in for EA and by the time it was received and reviewed, the class was basically set and they were just filling holes and he didn’t fit any of them. He actually received an LOA referral from Captain Freedie after that meeting.

As for what he did to improve his application: He got his lifeguard certification, volunteered as an assistant coach for his high school XC team and joined a community choir over Christmas to keep up his activities. He got a job as a lifeguard and is now working on finishing his Sea Scout Quartermaster rank.

He’s done well at the tech school and continued to stay in shape too so that helps.

I remember the stress waiting to hear and frustration for him not really being able to tell people what he was doing after graduation since he didn’t have a final answer until after that. I will say, if it’s what they really want, stay the course and get as much feedback as to what they can improve on and reapply if they can. Hang in there!

Wow! 400? I've never heard of them putting that many on the wait list. That doesn't seem right. Not doubting that is what he said, but maybe he meant 400 overall or something.

He heard about this time last year about being offered a spot on the waitlist. They don’t number them because they’re trying to fill holes (need more in a certain major, want representation from every state, sports needs, choir or orchestra players, etc.) and at that point everyone on the waitlist is equally qualified so they could pick anyone. We found out in the follow-up meeting after the class was closed how many they let in and how big the waitlist was. It’s definitely worth accepting the waitlist spot if they’re offered one since it gives them the option of reapplying during EA.

My plan B includes FAFSA and loans for to cover $$ not granted in scholarships. The loan is bein cosigned by my parents.
Does having a college loan disqualify me from reapplying?

It's hard; my DD was moved from EA to RA. At this point she has been in constant contact with her Plan B swim coach. She has told herself she is not getting into the CGA. I'm still hoping for a last minute call with good news but it's so much stress on these kids.

Having student loans wouldn’t disqualify you from applying or receiving an appointment. However, your credit/debt is looked as part of obtaining security clearance. That said, I think you have to be in pretty bad shape, delinquent, etc for it to be an issue.

I thought swabs/4c cadets weren't allowed to have any debt besides the ICA loan.
