I've been looking around and have asked a few people but have mostly received mixed responses. I am a college reapplicant and am just about done with my personal statement. Before I submit, I just have one question for everyone. Should my personal statement be a completely new essay, or should I work off of my essay from last year and add some new things about the last year or so of my life? Thanks in advance. (I probably should have asked this question before I wrote my statement but oh well)

Last year my son was very modest in his application and this year his mentor ALO told him while they appreciate modesty, this is not the time to be modest, this is the time to highlight all of your accomplishments. She also told him to use his final/third essay to talk about not getting an appointment last year. She told him to explain why he was applying again and what he had done to make himself more competitive this year.

So, I would recommend something along these lines - either all new essays or working in the things you've done to make yourself more competitive. Hope this helps some...

Definitely write a completely new essay. I felt what I wrote as a reapplicant had much more meaning and added a unique element to my application because I had additional experience to draw on.

I would write a new one. Summarize your achievements and accomplishments in high school briefly. Then write about your growth since high school. How did you improve, what classes you took, what lessons you learned.

I agree with @A1Janitor. If you had any noteworthy high school achievements after submission (like an honor or state championship), you could talk about how your rejection didn't phase you. As a reapplicant, Admissions is concerned mainly with how you have grown from your first application. A big focus will not only be your personal growth in all areas (character, fitness, academics, etc.) and how your growth will better prepare yourself for the rigors of USNA.

On a side note, if you are in any type of military program, I'd recommend bringing it up your application to your chain of command. YMMV, but a good front office will do whatever they can to support you. I had a recommendation from my SSMP OIC and it definitely enhanced my application. They can really talk about your potential as an officer, which at the end of the day, USNA cares more about that than you getting an A in Physics or whatever difficult class is in season.

Best of luck! Feel free to PM with any reapplicant questions. I will caveat that with my info might be a bit dated. My reapplication was 2015-2016.

They have your old one on file if you are a re-applicant.

Write a new one, highlight why you are now an even better applicant and should be considered.
