I am currently a plebe at USMMA and in the process of trying to transfer to USMA. My ultimate goal is to be an army officer and I spent time at USMMA to see how much I’d enjoy the school and decided it’s not right for me. I enjoy the academy lifestyle, but it’s a place for mariners that want to sail. I went here for the options open to me upon graduating, however, I feel it’s best I go to the academy that has the mission to create army officers. I applied twice before in the past and got waitlisted and denied. I’m trying for my third time hoping to get in. I’ve done well in both high school and prep in terms of grades with around a 3.6 but at USMMA my current GPA is a 2.8. I understand this is low compared to my competitors. Is there still a chance or should I not waste my time.

I would not waste your time. Focus on getting the best grades you can at USMMA and becoming an Army officer through the commissioning source there.

The 2.8 GPA right now is not going to be helpful. You could probably get it higher by the end of the semester, but that doesn't leave you a lot of time to get a nomination. Your best bet might be to finish the year at USMMA and maybe consider transferring to a civilian school or SMC next year and do AROTC. That gives you more time to get your grades up and really decide if USMMA is right for you or not.

Not saying you have no chance at all to get into USMA next year, but it will not be easy.

Honestly man it’s just a college, West Point would not be that much better than normal Army ROTC. I get wanting to transfer out of USMMA if you really don’t like the maritime aspect (I don’t really understand applying there if you’re set on the army anyway) but reapplying, a third time, to WP seems like a waste of time.

Restarting college as a freshman yet again, to spend another four years, when you’ve already been in college for two already? Is it worth turning college into a six year endeavor for the same commission as you’d get anywhere else?

I get that but so far my college experience has been the academy experience which I do enjoy a lot. It was hard to get used to at first hence why my grades dropped but overall I prefer it. I don’t want to go to a senior military college either because I’m not trying to pay to get yelled at for four years.

But if you enjoy the experience so far, which is USMMA, why bother restarting college all over again to change to USMA?

Also couldn’t you get an ROTC scholarship to an SMC? And why the unwillingness to pay for one when you say you enjoy the academy life anyway?

At this point you could be halfway to commissioning by now. Don’t delay it even more by applying to a school with the same end result.

Hang in there. Make sure you are involved in the Army Ops program on campus. They went on a trip to Westpoint a few weeks ago, and I think they are on another today.

Well, the USMMA GPA is not going to help you. If it’s the prestige of a USMA ring you are after, then work on your GPA. If it’s life in the academy that is holding your academics down, realize at West Point you will start over and have all the stress and time management issues there too. If it’s an Army commission that you are most interested in, and like the military academy life, why not look at an SMC - if you were accepted at USMMA, you likely have the academic, physical and medical credentials to apply for and receive an in college 3 or 2 year ROTC scholarship that pays your tuition (or R&B if you choose), all lab fees, books and a monthly stipend during the school year. Some SMCs also offer other incentives. And of course, there is OCS.
