Recipes Suggestions for a Barracks Room

My enlisted DS just arrived at his base, and will be in a barracks room for the next six months at least. He has no car, and the chow hall is a long hike in the wrong direction from his job, so he's looking for meal suggestions that he can prep with just a fridge and a microwave. He's not allowed to have other heating elements in his room, so no rice cookers, hot pots, coffee makers, etc.

This is an interesting thread with lots of great ideas but from what I have seen, the following will happen: your DS will quickly connect with someone who does have a car at his workspace and they will go on food runs or... the more tenured guy will pick up for him. He won't be the only one facing this predicament. Your DS will learn what others do to cope and never miss a beat. There are probably food trucks around the base also. I don't know your DS but I can assure you my sons wouldn't be cooking very often (if at all!)

I don't know how the barracks are run now (especially when I hear of the units having a fridge and microwave) but I suspect there is some rules about food and consumables from a health and welfare perspective. Open food could bring in critters and other unwanted pests. But perhaps it is the norm now.

When I was in flight school I got a hold of a small grill. I'd get roasts and slice them up, then grill up the slices, then store them for sandwiches.

BTW, never, NEVER microwave frozen fish. A pilot in my squadron did that and it took two weeks for the day room to air out.

Umm.. I have a few classmates who tell stories of cooking Hot Dogs in Bancroft Hall with Spiffy Collar stays..just poke the hotdogs with the collar stays, then put into the wall socket.

Microwave cooking isn't perfect, but once you understand how you're cooking you can do many things. Baked potatoes can be topped with just about anything. You can make scrambled eggs if you stir them periodically, which means you can make breakfast sandwiches (with bacon!) Start googling and see where it goes. There are lots of microwave recipes online, some of which are way more ambitious than I would have guessed:
