My wife and I are planning on visiting VMI for parents weekend in October 2014. Our DS will be a 3rd next year. We didn't make it last (rat) year because we live out of state in Texas and have other younger kids. But we've made arrangements to be able to fly to Virginia, rent a car for a week, and spend time in and round the Lexington area and attend VMI parents weekend this next October. We got "Grandma" coming to watch our younger kids while were gone for the week.
Parents weekend just happens to be the same time as our 25th wedding anniversary as well. So we're looking to stay in a nice Bed & Breakfast in/or very near to "old historic " downtown Lexington near the VMI campus, restaurants, shops, etc. Something "romantic" and nice for a 25th anniversary kind of B&B, but not to extremely expensive. Anything between $150-$225 per night range or less. We've only been to Lexington for DS's pre admissions visit and matriculation. So we didn't get to spend much seeing the town/area.
If anyone on this forum has any experience with or stayed in any nice B&B's like I've described above in Lexington, please let me know the name of the business and if you think it's a "25th special romantic wedding anniversary" kind of place. I've looked at all the B&B's listed on the VMI website under accommodations, but it's hard to tell how nice of a B&B's they are based off a small photo of the house/building for some of them and a brief description. They don't star rate 1-5 them anywhere I can see so I'm posting this to hopefully get some advice from folks who've stayed or worked at a nice B&B there.
If there's any B&B's a short distance out of town (1-3 miles) that are very nice please send me the business name as well. Although my wife loves history and historic building like we saw around downtown when we were there for the very short trips. I'm hoping be able to get recommendations for a few B&B's and narrow my list down to a few out of the 2 1/2 pages of B&B's listed.
I know Words like "nice, romantic, and historic" are subjective to each persons opinion, but if anyone can point me to a source or web link that has customer ratings or other information to help us decide, it would be greatly appreciated. I want to move fast. I'm planning on making our reservations no later than a week or two from now. I know all the hotel/motel/and B&B reservations fill up quickly each year for parents weekend in October. I hope I'm not to late already.
Lastly, if you have any suggestions about things to do (like the evening horse carriage rides in downtown Lexington), places to see, restaurants to eat at (nice fancy anniversary dinner restaurants with great food you'd take your spouse to) or any other things to see or do in and around Lexington (within a 1-2 1/2 hour drive from Lexington at the most), please let me know. We'll be in Lexington a couple of days before and after parents weekend , so we've got a few days to sight see and have fun. I'd like to make this as nice of a 25th wedding anniversary for my fantastic loving wife of 25 years who's help raise as I possible can (and afford). Thanks for your help
