Regular Admission appointments 2025

Yes a lot of cadets are athletes. Is it something like 80% of cadets played a Varsity sport in High School? But that’s not surprising when you assess the qualities/experiences these athletes bring that are aligned to selection criteria. The obvious 3 are fitness, working as part of a team and leadership. Of course applicants can also possess these qualities who have never played sports.

JJRugg is absolutely correct - the academy is absolutely dedicated to an holistic view of applicant when making an appointment decision.

You could be a Division One caliber athlete but if that is all you have to offer you will not get an appointment.
Agree completely. My son is a recruited athlete who was admitted in the EA cycle. Just posted the link as an add-on to @Fairfaxmom stating that the athlete numbers were available. Indeed they are and no need to make extrapolations after examining rosters, Twitter, or whatever.

In addition to being an athlete, my son applied as a 4.0 unweighted GPA student (AP Physics 1, AP Physics 2, AP Spanish, AP English Lang, AP English Lit, AP Environmental Science, AP Psych), ranked 10th out of 557 in his class, with a 1430 on his SAT (710 English, 720 Math). He’s an Eagle Scout, is Secretary of NHS, has a job, and all the community service hours you’d expect from any academy applicant. For anyone to suggest that because he plays a sport, he is somehow without academic merit is an error.

Are all those kids direct appointments? My son is being recruited but the coach thinks its 50/50 he may have to go to Prep. He is in the gray area.

If he gets offered prep tell him to grasp it with both hands. My son is currently prepping at NAPS. It has been a hard year especially as they have been restricted to base almost the entire time. But I know he will enter the academy absolutely prepared to be successful.

I’m in one of the prep programs for CGA (self-sponsored mmi) and there hasn’t been any RA appointments given to anyone here yet (CGAS or self sponsored). I believe appointments will start rolling out beginning of March/ end of February

Absolutely, embrace the sponsored prep program. My daughter is a self prep at MMI and has thrived this past year. I am convinced that it will absolutely set her up for success if she receives an appointment.

Reading your post, honestly, I'm very confident that any of the service academies will give your son a direct appt.....100 percent.....I don't know how USCGA would send someone like that to a prep school.....just my opinion but i've been following lot of direct appt candidate to various academies.....

Congratulations!

Thanks for the coaching. 159 of 271 or 59%, great data from 2024!

2 sport varsity athlete (football & swimming), state football championship, exceptional CFA score, 27 ACT, 3.5 GPA (STEM Physics, Chemistry, Calculus) tons of volunteering, USAF Jr ROTC (6 Years), Ground Search Rescue Certified USAF CAP, Certified Life Guard (also employed), Cyber Security School USAF CAP.

I'll keep the faith for the B Team in May.

Waiting with baited breath here in Texas. My son is a second time applicant (he is self-prepping this year). Best of luck to those who are waiting...it truly is hardest part of the application process. Trust the process. Best wishes!!
Hang in there, but don't stress either way. Being a Texan, ROTC scholarship + TASSP = effective full ride. It's a good alternative to consider if CGA doesn't work out.

Is he an athlete? We were wondering do the Coast Guard Preps get treated different than the Navy Preps, especially on the sports teams?

Yes he is a football player. No they don’t get treated any different really the only difference that my son has mentioned has been in the physical fitness test. Where my son has to run the 1.5 miles the Navy kids are allowed to do theirs on an exercise bike!

A word of advice to all awaiting news of appointments. Every year you will see that people try to rationalize why some receive appointments and others don’t and the order in which notifications are made.

Although some may find comfort in proposing that they didn’t receive an appointment because of X or haven’t heard yet because of Y this is a pointless exercise and insulting to those that have secured appointments.

Since being on this forum I have seen it stated or inferred that individuals only got their appointment due to:

1. Them being a recruited athlete
2. Them knowing someone of influence
3. Their ethnicity
4. The State in which they live

I am pretty confident that none of this is correct.
I will repeat an analogy used previously on this forum that is by far the best explanation how how the recruitment decisions are made.

The decisions on an incoming class is like building a jig saw puzzle. The academy knows the size and shape of the entire puzzle and each applicant is assessed to see if they fit into the puzzle. Some of them will be easy choices, some of them will offer something unique or rare which will secure their place. And some will be almost interchangeable. When the decisions boards meet they are looking to see how your ‘shape’ will fit into the puzzle and they are looking to build the very best class possible that consist of individuals who bring a diverse but excellent set of skills, backgrounds and experiences.

Don’t waste your energies into trying to rationalize fictional advantages that other applicants have. Certainly don’t repeat them on here, it is insulting to those that have secured appointments and demeans their achievement.
It was me........and it was brilliant:
