Rejected USCGA Class of 2025

A declaration of intended major has been a part of the CGA application for many years...10+ years that I am personally aware of. Cadets are allowed to change majors their first year, but it comes with some strict guidelines, as the non-stem majors are capped.

As for the discussion regarding rejections and the reasoning behind it (which happen every year), @rjb dug up an old post of mine and quoted it above. It is a puzzle, and I truly believe most people would be amazed to see the caliber of applicants that CGA considers. There are so many roles that cadets must fill, and Admissions truly considers the "whole" person, and what they bring to the table...what's their "hook". Years ago, during an Admissions Partner training, the head of admissions told us "Don't bring me all 4.0 perfect SAT candidates. We can't run this Academy if everyone sits in their room and studies." So while tangible scores are an easy comparison, the Admissions staff truly searches for those perfect puzzle pieces to make the CGA puzzle complete.
If CGA is your DD/DS's dream school, and they find they are rejected, reach out to CGA. Many re-applicants are successful.
Got that information from a phone call with my AO. I know what I heard, so I guess that person didn't have correct information. What does "USCGA Admissions Partner" mean?

See the reply to alaska66.
This still isn’t correct at all. Some of the admission partners are knowledgeable. Some aren’t at all.

With only 5 Admissions Officers covering the entire country, Admissions Partners are volunteers (prior graduates, Auxiliarist, parents of graduates/cadets, etc.) who assist CGA in identifying and recruiting candidates. We attend countless college fairs and service academy nights, make presentations at high schools, and are the local contact for candidates during the application process. In addition, we are tasked with conducting applicant interviews, and presenting appointments. Admissions Partners play a large role in conducting CGA's AIM program. We work closely with Admissions, and are continuously receiving updates and training on any and all changes with the application and admission process. I highly recommend applicants reach out to their local Admissions Partner, as they are a great resource when navigating the application process.

Big difference between an AO and an admissions partner. Which was it?
An AO. I asked because I watched the graduation video for the class of 2020 and wondered why there were so many government majors. That's the answer I was given.

I can assure you that applicants have had to declare a major on their application for at least the past 10 years, because I have personally seen the application every year. In addition, the major declaration is part of the applicants record in Admissions' database.

Perhaps the AO was alluding to the changes in the curriculum that began about 4 years ago. Previous to that, all 4/c took identical classes, which were heavy in STEM. This allowed for more movement in majors, as all cadets had the same prerequisites. Subsequent curriculum changes meant Government and Management declared majors were not required to take higher levels of STEM, which limited their movement of majors due to not having the prerequisites. Both the Government and Management majors are capped, and once that number of cadets in that major is reached, no other cadets can choose that major.

DS is 2018 grad. He had to declare his major on his application.

Wow, this ended up..........exactly where we knew it would.

I appreciate the clarification, and we all learned information that explains to those interested in the government and management majors that the 4/c STEM-heavy subjects are no longer the same as the more technical majors. So, you're right. This ended up where I hoped it would from my first post--those who are planning to apply or reapply can make better, more informed choices. Now we have the real right stuff...thanks to @alaska66.

Please explain how they can make more informed choices? What exactly do you think people will learn from this thread?

One of several great Christcorp threads.

I dont frquent the site as often as before, but do you have the incoming class profile along with the same classes graduation profile? I believe seeing those figures are eyeopeners. No one likes to talk about the ending profile numbers its always why my kid didnt get in, what my kids application looked like.

Do you have these profiles? I don't believe I have seen any of the graduation profiles compared to the incoming class. What do you mean by eye-opening?

I'm not quite sure of the information you are requesting. The incoming class profile is generated by Admissions, but once the class enters CGA, Admissions no longer tracks them. Are you asking about total numbers? The number that enter a given class vs those that complete and graduate/commission? There is, I believe, a historic attrition number around 17 percent over the 4 years (Class of 2019 entered with 287 cadets, and graduated 240). As for a graduation profile, none publicly exists that I am aware of, beyond the class billet list and graduation list. Nothing numeric as to GPA, etc.

@alaska66 I agree. I'm not sure what @No1Fanof2 was suggesting about comparing the incoming year to the graduating year being eye-opening. I believe the Coast Guard has great retention of their cadets completing all four years and even continuing to a full 20-year career.
