Upon completion of the prelim. application and moving on to the next stage, what is a brief overview of what is on the "official application." Like what's an overview of what you have to complete at the "Portal Login" part.

if I remember correctly there will be the following:

list of extracurriculars/ athletics
recommendation letters (you just enter the recommenders email)
school information
one essay prompt (you can find it online, I don't think it changes every year but it could)
proof of citizenship document (a passport picture or something like that)

That is about it. There might be one or two other things but it's not super long. USNA had the shortest application out of USAFA and USMA. I didn't apply to USMMA or USCGA so I can't compare those applications.

There aren’t recommendations letters on the application. You are required to supply your 11 or 12 English and Math Teacher email, as part of the full application, so they can compete an online EVALUATION (different than a letter of recommendation) of you.

Transcripts and standardized test scores are also required. As is filling out the DODMERB medical questionnaire. You will also complete a BGO interview.

Pay attention to what’s asked for and provide it. Answer questions, as asked. Be complete and thorough. Don’t rush for the sake of being first.

Also pay attention to your nominating source deadlines and requirements. Their deadlines are usually prior to USNA’s. Some even as early as September.

Good luck!

Having watched my son just go through it -

The USNA application is not too difficult. Mostly just listing extracurriculars and academics and such.
The one part you want to take time on is your personal statement. Make sure you tell a good story about yourself.

You also have all the stuff to get a nomination. That process can be fairly involved or so simple it is laughable (this is my son's experience from our MOC + 2 senators). Also apply for a VP nomination - my understanding is that USNA manages those so it gives you another opportunity.

Then you have medical ... which is probably the longest part of the entire process. That doesn't start until you are 100% complete with your application - including personal statement. So get that all done by Oct 1 if possible. It will put on the front end of the curve. Earlier is fine too.

Oh yeah there is an evaluation part for the application from a math and science teacher but also a portion where you can have 2 additional recommenders submit their actual letters of recommendation. The math and science teacher evaluation has to be from junior or senior year and the two recommenders can be anyone who knows you well.

Did they change the medical from 50% completion to 100? I got a notification from DoDMERB for my medical right at 50% or just below in December.

Interesting. My son was 50% complete somewhere in Oct, and finished 100% by first week of Nov and then was referred for medical in mid December. I think his BGO said they made the cutover somewhere in Nov / Dec, but in either case DS was done in early Nov.

Yeah I thought it was weird. Congrats to your son on the appointment.

The official word to BGO's is application has to be complete before USNA submits a candidate to DODMERB. This is a change from the past, which was a little less official but typically triggered at around the 50% mark,

That said, USNA can submit a Candidate's name to DODMERB whenever they want ..its a balancing act of not submitting names and commencing the process until it looks like the Candidate is going to go through with the application (keep in mind, somebody has to pay for all these medical exams, and there is not sense paying when the candidate isn't going to follow through) and getting the Medical qualifications done in a timely manner. The balancing act is a continuing struggle, but really a non-issue from the Candidate side . Bottom line, the timing of medical is within your control -- get the application done in a timely manner if you want to avoid delays in getting medical done.

Interesting, so was it completely random that I got DoDMERB early?

Were you a re-applicant? They basically roll over the results from the last year (with some updated questions) for those applicants.
