My DS was finger printed for security clearance this morning. He is a contracted cadet MS2 on three year scholarship with AROTC.
He was asked what his plan was, active, reserves, guard. He plans on being a pilot and intends to go reserves. They then encouraged him to sign up for a reserve unit now and was told that upon graduation he would be a 2nd LT with 2 years already served of his obligation. It was explained that with 2 years experience he would be more likely to receive promotion. He would also start being paid now for his service.
All of this sounds too good to be true to me. I have grave concerns. Can anyone advise?

Who was this discussion with? His PMS, ROTC ROO, chain of command, Army recruiter? The source of the advice determines credibility.

He was told to set up an appointment with the Battalion ROO to discuss. I am not sure the source other than it was someone during the finger printing process

The ROO is a good person to discuss the pros and cons of this issue. Anyone else along the finger printing process, I would not be so sure of.

Four years ago, I did meet a young 1LT when my DS was attending freshman ROTC orientation who was a Black Hawk pilot in the NG. He had a day job and was in the NG/reserves (SMP) when attending college. He felt that for him, the NG was a good deal that got him the pilot slot he wanted and also allowed him to seek the civilian job of his dreams. It was a brief conversation, so I don't have more details, but for him, it worked out.
