As the title hints at, I was considering going into marine reserves. I heard it is possible to do the reserves and then do Nrotc. Is there any way you could apply for the scholarship through this route? If so, what would be the benefits of doing so?

There are some threads on here about this in the past, so do some googling to get some specific answers. I know it is done and there is a path, but it is not necessarily the easiest. You effectively are signing a contract with the reserves, and then have to go for the NROTC scholarship later. If awarded, you then have to get released from the reserve contract to get onto the NROTC-MO contract. You have to continue all of your Reserve obligations until you get released from that contract. Which could get in the way with NROTC requirements. Plus if you are not awarded a NROTC scholarship, or cannot get the contract released. You stay in the reserves.

This is super wave top level info of a deep ocean subject. I recommend doing some serious personal research to make sure this path is right for you.

All scholarships are open to anyone who meets the basic requirements, regardless of civilian or military status.

Enlist in the USMCR because you want to be a Marine, period.

IMO, Marine Reserves —> NROTC is a great way to make things complicated. I have several friends that did reserves and then attended college (did not participate in ROTC) and then commissioned once they graduated. Can’t say that I ever heard of anyone doing the former (doesn’t mean it does not happen). Don’t get me wrong, I love my Marine Corps, but they aren’t the most flexible peeps when it comes to your future.
