Sometimes you run into really interesting people who have led interesting lives. Col John Barrett (Va Mil) who was a renowned Civil War historian was my faculty advisor at VMI many moons ago. He made a much greater impression on me than I on him I am certain He was an excellent teacher and and excellent man as well.
An oral history was done with Col Barrett which primarily covers his time as a Navy Officer in the central Pacific during WW2- it's really interesting and gives you a small idea of what it was like to have him as a History professor. Colonel Barrett was 92 at the time of his death. RIP Colonel Barrett
