Ahhh how I remember doing my Christmas shopping in the Mid’n Store. Nothing like a Blue & Gold Christmas! 😂

So much truth to this. DD visited us last week, along with a shipmate from her USNA class. One is a Marine, the other a submariner. They talked about how the fleet and the Corps are completely different from USNA.

Paraphrasing what they said: "USNA is serious stuff. But if AD is the big leagues, then USNA is little league. Make a mistake at USNA and you'll be corrected. Make a mistake on AD and it could be the difference between life and death."
Completely different from the Fleet doesn’t even begin to describe the difference.

Very normal. Plebe Summer has two phases… break down, build back up. They are in the break down. They are breaking down each Plebe, finding their weakness, pushing their limits and challenging them. It makes them work together to get through the challenge. During this they are learning uniform, room and personal standards as well. Build back up occurs in second set detail. This is very normal and part of the process. Grit is one of the greatest things each Mid learns at USNA. That grit starts in these sessions.
A taste of what it will be like when the Brigade returns in August and the real pressure starts with AC year.

We have a vintage set of Bill The Goat Christmas lights for the tree. And the midshipman nutcracker hanging ornaments. And Bill The Goat ornaments. And the blue and gold Santa. And one of us has a blue and gold stocking. 🤣

we also initially sent a small detailer gift (box of M&Ms) for the delivering detailer in her care packages (including those we sent to the Any Plebe program through the Chaplain's office) and she said that her detailer told her they were not allowed to accept it. I imagine there may be a lot of variability from one group to the next?
Ma'am the detailers never get in a position where they owe the plebes anything of any value and it works the other way around, too. This is a serious part of our honor training, but it also leads to some interesting bets about the outcome of football games. Plebes can never bet against Navy, so when Navy loses, plebes might lose things like right turns - they can only turn left in Mother B. Or they might lose their literal hind end and have to get creative when "Brigade, seats!" is called in King Hall before meals.
Funny sailors consider 10 minutes a long shower. Reminds me of my Dad. I’m a 5 minute max shower guy because of him. He’s a 3…
Sir, *20 minutes* is a long shower. I just *sat down* for 10 of them.

Plebe mentioned in a recent letter he may be able to test for the privilege to use the USNA sailboats at his discretion. Can someone tell me more about this, please?

Would he be able to use the boats when he has yard liberty or town liberty? Could he take family on them if we were visiting?

All Plebes get to take a test during PS about sailing knowledge. If they score high enough they can take the little sailboats out on their own. Yes they can on town liberty. Maybe on yard liberty? I believe they can take family. Spoiler… most don’t ever do this. Plebe life is busy. When family comes, most want to distance themselves a bit from the yard.

DD came home one day, sometime between receiving her appointment and I-Day with a Sailor nutcracker. She was proud as punch to feel it was her right to buy it. She found it while browsing in a Home Goods store.

In great news… it’s August! The Plebes woke up today thinking, ‘PPW is this month!’ They are settling in with set 2 detailers. Have some big events coming up like the baseball game and final PRT. They know they are going to make it and excited for PPW.

LOL... back in the day "Betting your A$$!" was pretty common, and the penalties were creative.. (Totally R rated)

So true..I don't recall anyone going sailing just for fun during Ac Year. (I sailed on Offshore Boats youngster year, and did intermural sailing one semester). Back in the day, if you passed the test, they issued a little yellow Navy Sailing card that was supposed to be valid at all Navy bases, and I did take my then GF (now wife) and her sister out sailing in Newport RI one weekend.

I also recall a bunch of us taking out the Knockabouts during a day off during Second Class Summer--we were stuck in the yard for Protramid and had a great time on the Bay. Looks like the sail training boats are different now, but the old Knockabouts had a ton of lead in the keel, were virtually indestructible., and we spent the afternoon trying to see how far we could make them heel over...

The newish (compared to the venerable KAs) basic sailing craft at USNA are the "Navy 26" which are the same as a one design called a "Colgate 26". I have raced them and they are probably a little quicker and maneuverable than an old KA but are still a relatively heavy keel boat and will behave as such even in relatively heavy wind. Lack of overwhelmingly large sails are also a factor in keeping them pretty upright.

Wondering if previous parents/alums/locals have any recommendations. We're looking to have a get together for parents of our plebe's platoon on Thursday night of PPW and was wondering if anyone has good suggestions of a bar or restaurant or other location that would be good for that? Just a place people could get drinks or food and be able to socialize. Thanks in advance!

If a nice night https://pussersannapolis.com/ deck is a nice spot.

See if someone has an Air B&B with a yard. We were lucky as DS had a plebe friend whose parents were in a condo in Eastport with a lovely waterfront pavilion gathering area where we got together.

Our own AirBnB is out in Crofton and specifically excludes large gatherings. We'll ask around though.

Pussers is also closing. Idk when. I purchased commemorative pain killer mugs 😬

I purchased them after having them. So I purchased more than I should have 😑 anybody need a commemorative mug? Or 4?
