Room and Board

Is it possible to have the NROTC scholarship pay for room and board instead of tuition? I know many who receive ROTC scholarships have full ride tuition offers from colleges but usually not room and board.
I don’t think at MIT this works. I could be wrong.

They don’t. Sorry. It would reduce what they would pay via financial aid by the rotc scholarship. If it was a full ride meaning MIT covers it all then- you’d get the R&B.
Thanks, I was hoping to save a few extra bucks :) . We visited a few weeks ago and we chatted with their Detachment Recruiting Officer, and I asked about my plan and she sort of looked at me like I was crazy😂. All she said is that most of their cadets are on a Type 1 scholarship and none of them use the Room and Board option. Can't blame a guy for trying.

Air Force ROTC Detachment 560, at Manhattan College in Riverdale, New York City offers its students a full ROTC scholarship free housing. This is also the case for Fordham University in NYC as well. This info came from an email my son received from the detachment.

Our son has a few options now for room & board depending on final school choice.

Lehigh granted a separate scholarship for room & board since he’s bringing an Army ROTC scholarship.

UVM waives room & board outright for all ROTC scholarship students (Army at UVM, Air Force crosstown at Norwich).

He has merit award from URI (Army at URO, Air Force crosstown at UConn) that makes room & board a net zero, same thing at UNH (both Army and Air Force on campus).

Pitt granted a merit award that cuts room & board in half which is extremely manageable since we’re in state.

We’re finding out that for the 4 Ivy’s that our son has been accepted to recalculate your financial aid offer once you let them know that you're bringing an ROTC scholarship to the table.

We were mistakenly thinking that that’d keep their original aid offer the same so that we could apply that to room & board but that’s not how they view it.

They view ROTC scholarships as money that’s separate from any expected family contribution.

His original aid offers were roughly a 67/33 split (financial aid/family contribution).

Looks like the Ivy’s are out for him since we’re discouraging him from roughly $80K in student loans (over 4 years) going solely towards room & board…that’s a mortgage payment without getting the house!

Good luck on the decision process. Great options, tough choices, and necessary (home) discussions. DS had acceptance to SA and a ROTC scholarship. Opted the ROTC route (DS' choice).

"Outside scholarships" can help with non-covered R+B. Apply !!

Sincere best wishes to all. Thanks to all these fine young men and women for pursuing such an honorable path.

I had an interesting call with financial aid at The Citadel today. Their room and board incentive is only "room" and they say board is on you, to the tune of about $6,000 per year. And even though they offer in-state tuition for freshman year to 3-year scholarship winners, you're looking at about $30,000 for year 1 absent any additional merit or need-based aid.

And yes, that's AFTER $29,000 in tuition and room incentives for 3-year scholarship winners.

😩

Yep, that net price calculator is very handy when making initial decisions on where to apply. Going through the process now with 2 sons I've found personnel at the units helpful initially on how the schools typically handle the ROTC scholarship coupled with any aid and outside scholarships. And the FA offices are usually great about letting you know whether you can stack scholarships/stipends.

Have you spoken to the ROTC units at these Ivies to see if they have suggestions for finaid?

We seem to be in the same situation as many ROTC & NROTC scholarship winners in that the scholarship is seen by the Ivy’s as replacing the school portion of the offer, essentially leaving us to fund the room and board aspect.

We’ve got great merit aid awards from some excellent state schools that allow their merit aid to be applied to room and board, making it a completely “free ride”.

No one can tell you what to do, and no one knows what your DS wants. But those "free ride" schools are the leader in my clubhouse!

💯 agree…. If they are a solid choice, can’t go wrong w/ free. My son uses the ROTC tuition waiver from his school & then DoD ROTC scholarship for room/board. We pay his fees ($3,200 per year). For a top engineering program….

He leaning Pitt for NROTC now.

Visiting Lehigh tomorrow for Army ROTC, they offered an additional scholarship to cover room & board except for incidentals. We’re in state less than an hour from Bethlehem, so this is a no brainer if he picks Army ROTC. URI & UVM are a very close second & third for Army ROTC.

Still has Norwich for all 3 scholarships, too.

26 days to go…😎

Do ROTC scholarships include room and board?
There is a list of schools that offer room and board with scholarships. Usually if they offer for one branch they offer for all. Good to apply to several with free room and board and let admissions know once you receive scholarships. It may help in many situations. I know Tulane is totally free for example.

Regarding Norwich - the scholarship you reference - is that the AROTC scholarship or a separate one that needs to be applied for?

My son receives the room and board award at Norwich. You don’t have to apply for it, it will be applied automatically if you’re a national Army ROTC scholarship winner. Mine was a 3 year winner and Norwich covered all of the first year too, it’s a great deal. We’ve paid for uniforms and program fee. That’s all.

Good evening,
I received my NROTC scholarship today but was a little confused by the technicalities of what it covered. The message says it will cover "tuition and required fees OR room and board (limited to a maximum of $11,500 per academic year or the cost of living on campus, whichever is LESS)." How is it decided what the scholarship will cover?
Thank you and best of luck to everyone else applying!
