ROTC Active duty/Reserves came out today.

So to follow up on this, how DO they get their ranking number then?
They’re ranked by their military grade. The PMS ranks them and they also get a ranking by their peers. My DS didn’t not rank high as he struggled his first year as an MS3. He’s doing great now but he’s already been ranked.

If I understand your question, it has been changing year-to-year, I believe mostly due to COVID? Below is how a cadet’s OML was decided this year. After their points are decided at the end of summer after MSIII, those points are racked and stacked against all cadets in the country.1697941683968.png

DS says there’s 3,060 AD spots and he’s ranked 3,100. What are the chances he’ll still get AD? That’s what he’s hoping for.
Like you posted on Oct 10, it sounds like he needs to pick his branches carefully. And it seems like BRADSO might help him.

When do they start getting ranked? MS3 year?

My understanding is OML will be used as a tie breaker if there a two competing for a branch. Correct me if I’m wrong. It’s a shame for my DS because he came is as an MS3, knowing nothing and struggled a bit. Has been doing great since advance camp and that may be the only reason he was still recommended for AD. I imagine he k owes his OML score but he hasn’t told me! I think there are 7,000 cadets total? Correct me again if I’m wrong.
Did he go to Basic camp or basic training. That's all the MS1 and 2 years is basic skills. At least at basic camp or BCT they fire weapons. Most MS1/MS2 never get to do a live fire till MS3 year.

He went to basic camp and then jumped into hi MS3 year. It was tough since there was no easing into it.

@franknd
This is my understanding of how it works. (Simplified)
1- after interviews, branches rank cadets in one of 3 groups - most preferred, preferred, least preferred
2 - cadets submit final order of branch preferences,
3 - cadets are ranked by OML within each of the three groups. This is the tie breaker that was mentioned. The “tie” is with everyone within a group (MP, P, LP) and not one or two individual cadets.
4- starting with the top of the OML, cadets are placed in the highest ranked branch for which they were put in the MP bucket. They go down the line doing the same for each cadet until a branch reaches its number. So it someone is MP and has infantry as their first choice, for example, but when they get to that cadet there are no infantry spots left, they then move to the next highest preferred branch that they were MP for and if that branch also isn’t available they keep moving down the order of preferred branches until they find a branch that still has remaining spots, and same down the line.

If all of the MP within a branch have been assigned somewhere and there are remaining branch spots, the P group will be looked at in OML order.

So, interviews are important because you can be low on the OML and still get put in a MP bucket but you will then be ranked within that bucket based on OML. Many of the branches award many more MPs than they have slots for so a low OML will still hurt you. But some branches, such as cyber, give out about the same number of MPs as they have available slots so if you are low on the OML but get a MP for cyber, you have a very good chance of getting it. There are a certain number of spots saved for BRADSO and once they are done slotting the regular branch slots they will take everyone who volunteered to BRADSO and move them to the top of their bucket, ahead of the remaining cadets who do not want to BRADSO.

And mentioning DMG, is it top 20% graduating cadets in the nation or out of those going AD? The way I read it, it’s the former. Regarding branching, I think I’ve seen @clarksonarmy mention that OML is used for tie breakers now?? Hopefully he’ll chime in.
DMG is top 20% of all cadets, regardless of whether or not they are AD. My son’s class had 6 DMGs and 2 or 3 went reserves. DMGs seem to get earlier BOLC dates, but I don’t know for sure if that’s the case. My understanding is that the DMG designation stays on the military record for the entire career, but I don’t know if or how that is used down the road.

MS3 Cadre here.

OML matters but isn't everything. Interviews, where you preference each branch, and where each branch also preferences the cadet also matters. This video is a pretty good explanation:

Complicating it more, some branches "most prefer" 2000 cadets but only have 200 slots to award, so it is hard to know where you sit unless you are top of the OML.

This is too late to help anyone branching this year as results are about to be released, but I imagine younger cadets and their families may come across this thread. Keep in mind, the process is always evolving.

DS got AD Ordnance. Any feedback on what his job will look like?
Where was Ordnance among his selections? And did he BRADSO? If so, did they use it? From what I understand, even if one BRADSOs, it's only used if necessary to get the desired branch.

It was his third choice with no BRADSO. He was most preferred for this branch.

He didn’t choose BRADSO at all or his 4th choice was with BRADSO? I didn’t think he could get a BRADSO if he didn’t put it as a choice.

Waiting to hear back from the VA guard:

I'll either be a FA officer, or a Engineer (sapper) officer!
