ROTC left over scholarships

So my DS wasn’t selected on the 3rd board in March for a National Scholarship. We thought his application was strong enough but regardless he didn’t make the cut. He received a call yesterday evening from Virginia Military Institute saying he had made their OML list for leftover scholarships that were declined and offered him a scholarship. At this point he has already committed to Norwich Senior Military Academy as that is his #1 choice so he declined the offer from VMI. My question is this, if he made the OML for VMI what is the likely hood that he will be offered a leftover scholarship from Norwich as well? Do the ROO’s have to go strictly off the OML scores? Or can they pick and choose who they want to offer a scholarship too? Anybody know how this process works? We are keeping our fingers crossed for a call from Norwich this week!

Norwich has the most generous financial package of all the SMCs I suggest your DS call the ROO at Norwich and ask. My guess is the VMI scholarship was a campus based offering. Good luck

I told him to call and he dosent want to because he feels like he’s annoying the ROO. VMI was definitely a campus based scholarship.

I don’t think it would annoy the ROO to hear from your DS about campus based scholarships. They would know he’s definitely interested. The impression we got from Norwich was they get these kids on scholarship if they want it. I hope he reaches out to them and lets them know he got that offer from VMI… really might help him get Norwich moving.

He needs to cowboy up and call. He needs to know the real deal so he can make informed decisions. The ROO's function is to help guide and answer questions from kids like yours so he shouldn't be worried about bothering him. Adulting is hard but he can do it.

Not to be harsh, but he needs to realize that this isn't something he should not do just because he doesn't want to annoy someone. This one phone call could end up changing his life/career path for many years. During ROTC/life he will be talking to a lot of higher ranking officers, may as well get used to it now

I would agree he should call. One of my sons best friends goes to Norwich. He was a persistent advocate for himself. Also this is main job of the ROO...they pride themselves on getting great candidates in the door. Let him know VMI offered and the decision is still in the balance.

I would think that letting the NU ROO know that VMI offered him a ROTC scholarship but he wants to attend Norwich should reflect well on him. On the Navy/MO side of things Norwich evaluates freshman applicants after the 1st semester for school based NROTC scholarships...kind of a "prove it" second chance method. My DD will be a freshman at NU this fall as well. She is already leaning toward PLC (I think she fears repayment of a huge scholarship if she drops due an injury or something) but I have encouraged to apply for the school based ROTC scholarship too.

If I am not mistaken, injury/medical related disqualifications void you of any repayment.

Thanks for the replies, he reached out to the ROO at Norwich University and it turns out he made the OML there as well! He is being offered a 3 year ROTC scholarship and Norwich is picking up 1st year tuition as well as Room & Board! DS is beyond thrilled! Norwich was his #1 choice and he really wanted to attend there.
He was super disappointed when he didn’t get selected for a scholarship on this past March Board so the plan going forward was to try for an on campus scholarship this fall. This is fantastic news! I’m really happy for him!

That is great @Rnormoyle!! What a great way to see his efforts immediately pay off. Love it!! Congrats!!

I’m so impressed with Norwich too! DS was awarded full tuition plus room and board paid freshman year also to go along with his national scholarship. Was not expecting that at all. What a deal! I hope others out there read this and consider Norwich when looking at schools.

Yes, we were very surprised also. They were also very generous with their academic scholarships when he 1st applied there last year. Great school with a lot of opportunities for the cadets.

He will not be annoying the ROO. He is very helpful, as well as all the AROTC cadre. Make sure ya'll attend the scholarship banquest the night before Rook Arrival.
