I had a great conversation with DS today. He intends to join the sailing team as a member of a 4 man keel boat crew. I went to the website to find a schedule of races and to try to acquaint myself with the overall culture of the sailing team. I didn't find a lot. So if anyone out there has experience...

What's the practice schedule? How far and wide do they travel? Is there a schedule anywhere? Anything to help me understand what he'll get from being on the team.

Just to be clear, my questions are not motivated by anything other than my desire to have a mental context from which I can follow my son's experiences from afar. No worries, just curious.

I don't think you're gonna get crucified in this thread...lol My son told me they practice 4-7pm, M,w,& TH (I think that's what he said) and races on weekends which we can come to watch - but no contact until after Acceptance Day...of course. To watch the race, I think you just go down to the Waterfront docks. I'll be looking out for the schedules too - see who finds out what first...

The Keelboat team is not necessarily intercollegiate, such as the dinghy team is. My 1/C year roommate was pretty heavily into it and, aside from practices, did little sailing actually at KP. Most of the regattas were at Yacht Clubs up and down LI Sound and beyond. This is probably why you don't see much of an actual "schedule" per se for the keelboat team. I remember that he wouldn't know too far in advance exactly which regatta he was sailing in because there were multiple ones each weekend.

Deepsea will be able to answer this much better.

That's correct...my DS is also on the Sailing Team (Offshore) and relayed that they practice 1600-1800 3 X a week but that Plebe's are not be able to do any overnight sailing/race trips until after Acceptance Day. After AD, they will need to have a "3.0 to go" to regattas away from campus...think the schedule works it's way out as the season progresses adn I'd expect changes along the way as well..The key for our DS/DD is to keep their grades up in order to join the team in the away regattas...and yes, you won' have much contact with them at the races, but it's still fabulous to watch and support them...we'll be coming up from Texas frequently once we know the tentative schedule, so pls do share what you can find out and we will do the same...hope this helps...

Sailing is a great sport, my youngest DS gave up baseball (of which i coached his travel team for 6 years) and wanted to start racing his Laser, loving sailing myself, we found a decent summer sailing program in Annapolis to get him used to rules, tactics and so on then off to Oxford Md. for his (and My) first regatta. They set up the boats on the beach said good luck and off he went...2 miles up river to were the course was laid out, did not get to see anything. he's having a blast and i guess that is satisfaction enough, but after coaching both boy's in baseball all these years it was tough to sit and read for 4 hours
