This is just a small thing but for the SAME Camp essays (particularly the personal statement), should it be more of a serious paragraph about accomplishments and pretty much a resume in paragraph form or should it be more like a personal essay (for college). It's only 250 words long I'm assuming it's the former but I'd just like to double check. Thank you in advance!

AT LAST! Someone has discovered this gem.

My DS attended the Navy Camp. I'm sorry I can't remember the exact format of his application. His essay established his STEM bona fides (Math Counts, Science Bowl), Sports (Lacrosse, Hockey), Long term aspirations (Engineering, building stuff).

It was an excellent experience. It was so successful that when we picked him up at the airport, he announced he wanted to forego college and enlist straight into the SeaBees, because "Officers don't really do anything." The camp was run by retired enlisted folks. In the end, he received a 4yr NROTC scholarship.

What is SAME camp?
Society of American Military Engineers. My daughter was selected to go to SAME Engineering and Construction camp after she was turned down for USNA stem camp after her sophomore year. The St. Louis Post sponsored her attendance which was a week long and they paid for everything. My daughter's camp was at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in N.C. I highly recommend it if your child is interested in pursuing the academies and is interested in STEM. There are SAME camps for most branches I believe. It looks great on the SA applications.

Fantastic!! I had not heard of it before, and as it was posted in the USNA forum, was thinking a typo.

Already have two Mids! But thanks for the share 😊

I've been flogging it for years and no one on this forum seems to have heard of it.

It is great experience for the kid. For many it is probably their first admissions-type essay as well as their first experience asking total strangers for money. Good practice for later.

The one criterion seemed to be a genuine desire to attend an SA or to apply for an xROTC scholarship.

Society of American Military Engineers, Engineering and Construction Camp. What a great program!

My son, a rising junior in HS, just completed this year's Camp Lejeune SAME camp. He's a good (not great) student, good (not great) athlete, and enjoys working construction and solving problems, but this isn't something he'd pursue on his own. I had to push him to go, so I was a bit apprehensive about how he'd respond. His older siblings referred to the camp as Nerd Camp and were sure that he'd spend a week languishing in social deprivation and immersive geekdom. He called home several times and raved about getting set up with cool problems for his squad to solve and working with teammates, under the pressure of deadlines.

This is a fantastic way for HS kids to gain exposure to engineering, to spend a week on a military base, interact with military personnel who act as mentors and squad leaders, and get a taste for getting away from home and quickly bonding with a diverse group of peers.

Thank you to Joe Angel and staff for running a fantastic show.

Note to moderator: This thread is currently on the USNA forum, but the program could be of interest to students and parents of all branches, pursuing either academy appointments or ROTC scholarships. I wasn't sure where to post.

That's when you trot out. "Just fly airplanes and drive subs and ships"
My wife and I just said nothing. Sometimes it's the best thing to do.

He got the NROTC 4yr but was medically DQed. He is, however, fulfilling his dream of building stuff.

So happy to hear your DS took advantage.

Your description is spot on.

I think the best part was the grizzled old retired Seabees who just love what they do and want to pass it on.
