Thought I would ask here, because I'm having difficulty finding an answer. My dad, retired Navy Captain will attend the military ball at the NAPS graduation in Newport in May. Attire is SBDs, my dad doesn't fit in his. New ones are $500+ (spendy for just one night), are there any place to rent the uniform? or special programs for vets to purchase?

The thrift shop at Naval Support Activity Annapolis has many uniforms at low prices. I am sure many other Navy installations have similar programs

No requirement for him to wear SDBs; retired have the choice to wear a uniform at military events. Dark suit, white shirt, dig up an understated Navy theme navy tie, wear a miniature warfare pin for his community on his left lapel, beautiful shine on his shoes, and he is all set. He should have a miniature warfare pin in a box somewhere with his ribbons and medals. Or pick one up at the Newport NEX or go online to NEX.com to order.

Aspirational goal: plan to shine in the uniform in May 2027 to administer a private commissioning oath.

Yes, agree no requirement. I would just love to have both my dad and son in uniform. :)

I don’t know what it is … but the folks who live in and around Newport RI are really nice folks.

Anthony’s Seafood is a really good place to eat …
