Is it still necessary to apply for scholarships with a USAFA appointment?

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

It’s never necessary to apply for scholarships. But what kind are you referring to?

Be sure to read the fine print on any scholarships you apply to. If they are to be specifically used for tuition or room and board, or possibly other restrictions, those don’t apply at USAFA.

As noted above, some scholarships can be applied to your pay account at USAFA to help defray various issue items. You don’t need them, but they are nice to have.

Look at the guidance in Class of 2026’s Appointee Handbook.

Yes. My cadets did and were able to keep most of them even with attending USAFA. Extra money for them.

No harm in applying. If you do receive an appointment and finish Basic Training, I want to float the idea of declining/returning the money. You will be financially secure as a cadet, and perhaps the money could help someone else in a less fortunate position than you.

My company gives $2500 a year for expenses and another $1000 for first generation college students. Kid got shot down last year, but has 3 more tries for the $2500 scholarship.
