Hello everybody, I've been lurking on this forum for quite a while and had a question I haven't seen pop up.

I am moving over this summer to Texas * from Virginia * and right now my residency is in Virginia.

As a result of this, I will be putting all Texas Universities on my schools of intent and there will be no Virginia schools, could this potentially in any way affect my chances of a scholarship? Is there somebody I could contact? Thanks so much, kindly - Mythy

Is this for Army? If it is the same as it was a few years ago it was required to list at least one school in your current state of residence. You could list it last though, that doesn’t matter. My daughter only listed one in our state and it was a private school, all of her public schools were out of state, she still received an offer and she is currently at the private school in our state. All of her listed public schools were out of state.

@MythyLW one more thing, your list of schools are not really considered until after you get a scholarship. The first step is to fulfill the requirement of the application and you have to have a balance of private and public schools. The other thing that comes into play is if there are spots available at the schools you listed after you were awarded one. Then they go down your list looking for available spots. You will get the school offers base done on availability at that school at the time you received your scholarship.

kk, thank you. I'm only worried in my current situation because even though the chance is slight, if I ended up getting a scholarship and they told me I could only go to my Virginia school, I would ultimately be in a pretty bad spot since I need to be in Texas with the family. Thank you though, I guess I need to work on getting a scholarship at all first!!

And yes, it's Army.

You can always request a transfer of scholarship in the spring if that happens.

Thank you, didn't realize school selection was based on the school's availability as well. Thought it was kinda like Army saying, nah no scholarship to this one, etc.

Not at all, and that is the cool thing. They pick you, then look for available spots (basically already budgeted for based on each schools mission of how many officers they need to commission for the graduation year) going by your list of schools. If all your schools are very popular, it is possible there wouldn’t be any spots and therefore no offer. But the reality is, there probably will be spots at a minimum to one of your schools. None of my daughters schools were the highly selective popular schools you would think of. She was given her 1st, 3rd and 4th choices on the 3rd board. She chose her 4th choice.

Question about school of intent...

DS was not awarded 1st board. I know that his file won't be reboarded and the only thing that he can really update to increase his chances is test scores, which he doesn't really need to do imo (has a 33 ACT). However, can he change his schools of intent after being boarded? He might want to add a school but we weren't sure if he can or should do that now.

Yes - he should be able to do that, they look at the schools after a scholarship has been awarded. If he has a problem changing them - contact Cadet Command, they should be able to help him get it squared away. Good luck to your son, and keep us posted.

Thank you!! He's re-evaluting his Plans B and C after not getting awarded the first board, even though I tried to tell him it likely wouldn't happen. Teenagers!

My daughter is currently boarded/under consideration for the 2nd board going on now. She too thinks she wants to add a school to her list - was your son successful in adding his school after being boarded? We don't want to mess up the application at this point if it causes a problem.

He decided to leave it as it was for this board. He's pretty adamant about his school choices and says he is only willing to go to the schools he has listed or SA. If he isn't awarded this board, he might be singing a different tune...we'll see. He is pretty rigid and once he makes up his mind about something, it is like moving a mountain to change it! Good luck to your daughter! Apparently the portal has been updated and says that award notification will be around February 1.

Based on what I've read, the school choice(s) listed when applying for the scholarship are not taken into account when creating the OML list or awarding the scholarship. Rather, you are awarded the scholarship based on the merits demonstrated in your application. Also, the PMS with whom I interviewed with said that a person can be awarded the scholarship to particular school(s) but can request that the scholarship be applied to a different school, given that the proper school change request form is completed.

TLDR: School of choice changes are okay; changing SOI on the portal shouldn't be a problem

See AROTC portal, "Additional Information" tab, "Accepting Scholarship and Transfer Requests" subtab for more information on transfers

The only school my son got accepted to wasn't on his top 3. He got the AROTC scholarship to his 1st choice. He sent a letter explaining that he'd been accepted to school #4 on his list and requested a transfer. It was granted.
