Hello, everyone.

My Senatorial Nomination Application requires one core teacher and two residents. However, the system is set up so I won't be able to see their letter, as they will be sent directly to the office.

Would it be appropriate to ask them to send me a copy of their letter so I can use it for other applications?

Thanks.

You can ask them to write another letter not specific to USNA.

The Senator doesn’t want you to see the letter.

I don’t recommend it, whether “them” means the Senate staffers or the letter-writers. I think you will find your nom sources and other applications may ask for different formats, to address different elements of performance, or require they be sent directly, not passing through your hands.

Good advice to ask for a separate letter, they’re likely to be similar. I’d caution against asking for a copy, feels off to me. You can trust it’ll be glowing if you pick the right teachers. Be gracious, humble, and thankful. It’s an arduous process and it’ll take a lot of help. Best of luck!

Like everyone on here my son needed so many LORs this past year during the college application process. Add in nominations, multiple scholarships, Eagle Scout, an internship etc etc it can be overwhelming. He made a list of everything he’d need, with the due dates and what they were asking for (math teacher etc). Then decided who he’d ask for each and would say ‘hey do you mind writing me a letter for this, this and this, they can be very similar.’ Then after they agreed, typed up a document with written instructions for each one to give that person complete details so they could tailor the letters as needed. Provided stamped envelopes if needed, or instructions for digital submission. Everyone was very accommodating since it was very organized and he didn’t keep coming back to the same person to ask for more. Several of his teachers had deadlines so they could work on them over the summer before senior year so check for that. A few of these people also sent him a copy which was unnecessary but kind. Sure made this mom tear up a bit to read the heartfelt impression he’s left on some of the adults in his life.
