How would I go about getting a letter of Recommendation from my Senator? I work for my Congressman and already have one from him. So how would I go about asking for a recommendation?

Search for "Service Academy Nomination," once on their website and follow their application procedure. If applying for a Service Academy, you'll need more than a letter of recommendation. You'll need a nomination. But great to already have a personal relationship with your Congressman!

I think you might be mixing up Letters of Recommendation with nominations. LORs help you get nominations when you apply directly to the Senator and Congressmen. You can look at the posts above to find out how to apply for them, usually in the spring.

My DS campaigned for his state representative and simply asked him for a LOR (for the nomination applications of his Congressman), which he received like you. He did not ask for a LOR from his federal Congressman (or Senator) even though the state and federal Representatives were of the same party and campaigned together because DS never actually met the Congressman. I would suggest only asking for LORs from people who know you well and can attest to your strengths, not choosing someone based on their position. If you did still want to ask though, it seems like you'd be asking the Senator to write a letter of recommendation for you to apply to that Senator's own nomination, which would be odd.

The next question is what are you getting LORs for? Typically the LORs are for the nomination applications for the Senators and MOC, while the LORs for the WP application come only from the 4 teachers (math, science, English, PE). I have read of people sending a LOR (from a non-teacher) directly to West Point to be included in the candidate's file, but I'm not sure there is a "place" for that in the Whole Candidate Score since it is not a requirement for everyone. It could be one of the "intangibles" that would help Admissions choose one candidate with equal scores over another, but no one knows.

Because you actually work/ed for your Congressman, though, there is a form for an Employer Evaluation that could be sent directly to WP that does seem to presumably carry some weight in the WCS since there is an entry for it on the candidate checklist.

Good luck! Starting early and asking questions are the best ways to stay on top of things!
