I'm going into my senior year and am a candidate for the C/o 2025. My schedule for next year is as follows:
AP Physics C (1.2 cred)
AP Literature (1 cred)
AP Calc BC (1 cred)
AP Latin (1 cred)
ST Debate (0.5 cred)
ST Public Speaking (0.5 cred)
ROTC (.2 Cred)

I'm wondering if I should drop the Standard courses as they are the lowest weighted courses my school offers, but am conflicted because I feel like they would be useful to the leadership aspect of West Point. If I do take the two courses, my GPA for the year will drop ~0.15 as a result, even if I get a 100. Any advice regarding whether I should drop or take the courses is greatly appreciated!

What’s your current GPA? What would you replace it with? Are you able to keep up with the academic rigor of so many AP classes and still be active in athletics or ECs or both?

Freshman GPA: 4.4
Sophomore GPA: 4.4
Junior GPA: 4.9
Senior w/ Debate and PS: ~4.75
Senior w/o Debate and PS: ~4.9

-- I would probably replace it with a STEM elective or simply drop it since I have enough credits to graduate.
--If I do drop the course, I'll have about 3 study hall periods a day so I'll be able to keep up with my academics and extracurriculars.

Thank you for the response!

Have you asked if your school if you can do it pass/fail or otherwise participate in the competitions without the units?

You are right about the leadership/rounding aspect. This strikes me as the kind of problem administrators and teachers want to help you solve.

Unless you are "that" speech and debate guy or gal...

If you’re interested in the courses, I would recommend taking them. Your transcript will include an explanation for how your school calculates GPA so the Academy will be able to understand the weighted versus if it was strictly an unweighted GPA.

Don’t lose out on an opportunity in the meantime focusing on what could be in the future that isn’t guaranteed. If you’re taking as hard of a course load and meeting all the other block checks the Academy is looking for academically in your other courses, taking courses you are interested in and that round you out can’t hurt. GPA isn’t everything.

Remember that the Academy routinely admits folks from schools that don’t calculate GPAs or are homeschooled. The Academy has its own system for figuring out rigor within your academic opportunities, and they aren’t just looking for nerds. They need well rounded leaders.

unless it is the difference between being valedictorian or not, take what you want and excel. my DD is taking PA history as a senior elective because it interests her. outside Band and her languages, it is the only unweighted class she has taken.

I’d agree with what has already been posted. Either way it seems your GPA is strong enough to support your application so take whatever interests you most.

HS is one of the few times you can take interesting courses for free and are given the time to do so. Expand your horizons and skills!
