Does anyone know how and when to apply for a service connected nomination? All I can find is a page on nomination sources on West Point’s site that says I would be eligible, but I cannot find anything else. Also, are these nominations competitive or are they just given if you meet the criteria?

There is no mad rush to do these right now, as everyone who is eligible for one and supplies appropriate documentation, receives one. Someone will pop up and tell you where/how to access the form.

Get it done over the summer so you have at least 1 nom in your portal before appointments start going out in the fall.

They are competitive in the sense that while there might be a few hundred who obtain, say, a Presidential nom due to simple eligibility, USMA can only charge 100 appointments in the class to that nomination source or authority.

Think of different types of noms as “competitive buckets.” There is the VP bucket (likely everyone applies), 2 Senator buckets and 1 Representative bucket, Presidential bucket, JROTC/ROTC Bucket, etc. Fully qualified candidates compete with each other in each bucket for available appointments.

If you haven’t read the Sticky Note pinned to the top of the Nominations forum, I recommend it.

Just found:

Read the first para. Found via google search string: “USMA Presidential nomination form.”

If you are asking about either you or a family member being "in" the military, it is a "Presidential" Nom, if you are asking about the "Service Connected 100% Disabled" nom, that is a different animal. There are required VA and Military documents you have to submit along with a copy of the below letter:

Must reach West Point by JANUARY 31 of the year seeking admission

Director of Admissions Date___________________
United States Military Academy
West Point, New York 10996-1797
Dear Sir:
I request a nomination under the ______________________ category for
the class entering the United States Military Academy in the Summer
of 20___, and I submit the following data:
Name of Applicant:__________________________________________________
Address:____________________________________________________________
Telephone Number:___________________________________________________
Date of Birth:______________________________________________________
Social Security Number:_____________________________________________
Names of Parents:___________________________________________________
Military Rank of Parent:____________________________________________
Social Security Number of Parent:___________________________________
Component and Branch of Service of Parent:__________________________
Sincerely,

This is what was required for both the "Presidential" and the "Service Connected Disabled" noms. I think WP is different from USNA, as USNA lumps both categories together on the application, then separates the two during the admission process to fill out the class. Don't know about USAFA or USMMA (don't think USMMA has a "Service Connected" nom).

I would expect phone or email communications between the applicant and the academy during this process. **** As noted for WP, MAKE SURE this form is in before February 1st to be considered.

Ok thanks, I qualify for both, so there’s two nominations I can receive? Should that letter be sent twice, once asking for each type of nomination? Thanks so much for your help also.

Not totally correct, Presidential is for the children of career military (current or retired) while applicants actually in the service would go for a SecArmy (or Navy/AF) nomination which is the nom for enlisted people. An enlisted person who is ALSO the child of a career military person could qualify for both.

There is one letter that you send. It is sorted categorically at USMA. You can use the example letter on the USNA page. There is one attachment/proof that is required. It is the exact same documentation for the big three service academies. Gold Star & 100% Disabled Vet kids are lumped together. In a life that is challenging, it is a decent category for nominations. You are still expected to apply to your congressman and senators.

If you have questions about this category ask away. This is our life.

The service-connected letter is on the questionnaire when it comes up. All that has to be entered is some basic information on the type applied for and the letter self generates. The candidate signs and uploads the letter and supporting documents. Shortly afterward, the specific type of NOM is annotated to the Nominations tab of the application. A highly competitive candidate with a service-connected NOM might get an LOA early. My DS had his NOM posted in July with an LOA in September.

My oldest had his LOA just after Labor Day Weekend; the Baby...late April for a BFE with no fanfare. For #1 my husband was still alive so completed the active duty nomination paperwork in August and then was not alive for the LOA--but I think Admissions knew what had happened and adjusted accordingly. I am not sure about this form you filled in--we never saw it and instead used the sample letter from USNA and the youngest mailed it to USNA, USMA, and USAFA--and nominations appeared in his portals.

Once your applicant portal opens up, there will be a link to the specific form you should fill out to request a nomination for service-connection. As stated above, if you meet the clearly spelled out qualifications, you will receive that nomination upon approval.
