Shattered Front Teeth

My son has received a Conditional Appointment to the US Merchant Marine Academy! He has one remedial item on his DoDMERB exam. He has to get a repeat urinalysis due to protein in his urine. He will be doing this next Monday (after 3 days without wrestling practice and no tournaments this weekend).

Now for the problem... During a wrestling match last month (after his DodMERB exam) he shattered both his front teeth including the roots. They had to be removed. He is now wearing a ‘flipper’ (a retainer with false teeth). They need to wait another month, then they can start the process to get implants and crowns. The dentist says they can get everything done before indoctrination in July.

Is this going to be a problem for his appointment? Should he get the implants?

If he has been injured or hospitalized after his initial exam, he should contact DoDMERB immediately.

Failure to disclose a pre-existing condition before I-Day can be grounds for separation.

implants

my son had an implant done this fall -- I checked w/ Mr. Mullen and so long as there were no complications, it was fine (there weren't any) and he looks a lot better .

Thanks for the information. Frankly, we didn't think much about it until he actually got the conditional appointment. Then it dawned on us that we needed to inform the DoDMERB.

Needless to say, it has been an exciting day!

Wrestling always finds a way to complicate things doesnt it? Being hydrated after a wrestling practice is about impossible.

Just spoke with USMMA Director of Admissions. He said that as long as boy is completed healed with no follow-up after the implants, it will not effect his appointment! Big relief.

As for winning the match, unfortunately he had to forfeit the match as the teeth were still hanging in his mouth. However, he wouldn't let us take him to the ER until after he weighted in for the next day of the tournament. We were in the ER until 2am while they removed the shattered remnants of his teeth and roots. Then he turned around and wrestled the next morning. Won 2, lost 1 for the day!

Wow. That is one tough kid!

I'm amazed and proud that he is an American and going to be a defender of the nation!
