What is the Plebe running and daily show policy? I need to get new shoes but don't want to waste money this close to I-Day.

Your Permit to Report, which you should get this month, will have pages of info and To Do/To Bring.

Take a look at 2020’s PTR in the meantime (couldn’t lay hands on 2021, though I have posted it a few times this year), Pages 10-11.
Shoe gouge! I don’t expect it will change for 2022, but there is always a possibility.

You will be issued everything you need on IDay. That includes boots and two types of athletic shoes. One for running and one worn with white works uniform. However, it is recommended that you break in two pairs of running shoes prior to IDay. Wear one when you report, and have a second pair mailed later in the summer or at the start of the academic year. Any make, model and color has typically been fine. Choose what’s most comfortable etc for you.

This is also the perfect time to go to a running store where your stride and footstrike tendencies can be analyzed. You’ll be doing a lot of running on hard surfaces, including chopping inside on deck.

Start now to harden your legs to stave off shin splints. Good, well-fitted shoes can also help.

I read that but it just deals with running shoes. But for a.c. year daily shoes is there a color or style restriction?

You’ll be in uniform shoes. If you’ve seen videos of I-Day, you see plebes lugging around big sea bags (duffles). They are filled with issue clothing, including shoes. They are a flat black or white lace-up type, depending on which uniform, for both men and women. Women wear plain black or white pumps, with a specified heel height limit, with certain uniforms. Even the gold ball earrings that are allowed have a specified no-larger-than mm size. No pumps for men at this time. Or earrings. ;)

If you don’t know how to polish leather shoes to military standards, now is a good time to learn. YouTube.

Your question - “is there a color or style restriction” - every aspect of what you are wearing visible externally will be a uniform prescribed by Midshipman Uniform Regulations until you wear civilian clothes at Thanksgiving while on leave, with the exception of some things like running shoes. There are some fun nights like Halloween and other stuff, but you’ll find out about that later.

Have some fun at this link, scan down for Uni Regs.

Most of all - don’t worry about it. You’ll get the PTR and start getting that done. Enjoy this time at school and with family. Your life will be bound up in rules, regulations, policies and guidelines soon enough.

You can show up to I day with nothing and be fine. I would recommend your own running shoes. The rest of the shoes as mentioned will all be issued. There is no need to go purchase leathers or boots ahead of time like you see for some of the other SAs.

You might want to consider buying gel inserts to cushion your feet when you buy your running shoes. During DS's PS a couple of years ago, I mailed him a pair of inserts, along with his favorite shampoo/soap brands. About halfway through, PS, I mailed the second pair of shoes that he had broken in before he left for I-day., a second pair of inserts, and other items he had requested. At PPW, he wanted another pair or two of the inserts and new running shoes, because both of his old pairs were pretty trashed. (One of the ) athletic shoe stores in DTA had sales during PPW.

This is great advice but definitely make sure you have adequate Vitamin D and Calcium. There were SO MANY stress fractures my DD's plebe summer year. I am a pediatrician and virtually every teenager I check has low vitamin D. Unless you are a lifeguard at the end of summer, drink lots of milk, or take a supplement, you are deficient. So continue to run prior to plebe summer but also make sure either your diet has above nutrients or take supplements. I think shin splints and stress fractures are totally avoidable. And Congrats Texmex!!!

There's a fantastic running store at the Annapolis Towne Centre, Charm City Run LLC. Took my Mid PPW and he was fitted with awesome running shoes and inserts. These replaced the pair he wore in on IDay. Good luck and welcome aboard!

Speaking as a varsity track and cross country runner (and 2022 appointee) a GOOD pair of running shoes is going to cost you $100+. These should get you through plebe summer no problem even if you break them in. Most running shoes are designed to take 250-400 miles and we will not be running that much during plebe summer. From what I’ve seen from YouTube videos and heard from my uncle, class of 2000, you run about 150 miles at most during plebe summer.

Shin splints are common. The best thing you can do are calf and shin raises along with heal walk and toe walks. I also take calcium supplements (which contain Vitamin D too) to help reduce shin splints. PLEASE start running before plebe summer if you truly want to avoid running injuries. I’ve been running for almost 3 years now heavily and still get injuries all the time, it’s the nature of running.

My favorite quote I’ve heard about running is “the only people who say running is healthy for you are those who do not run”. Obviously this is a joke, but I love it because running has a tendency to hurt those who love it most.

Get a good pair of shoes and start running now!
