Should I tell my AO know I'd be interested in the Scholar program?

Hello all,

I just fully submitted my application a short while ago. My main goal is an appointment to the academy, however, if I was to be offered a spot in the Scholar program instead I would definitely accept it. Should I make it known to my AO that I would be interested in the Scholar program?

Every application is considered for the Scholars program. You don’t need to let them know.

Applicants who are not chosen for an appointment will be considered for the scholars program. Whether or not you will accept a scholars offer is not really considered therefore informing your AO that you are willing to accept the program will probably not do much. Remember scholars targets candidates who come from certain demographics who may lack enough academic rigor to make it at the academy. They also use it for some recruited athletes. If you don't fall into those categories you will probably not receive a scholars offer.

Where did you get this information from? I have never heard that stated before.

I think that quote is incorrect as well. I hear it all the time and it just makes me cringe. The Scholars Program does not target any specific demographic. It is for ANY candidate that the Academy admissions staff feels very strongly would be an asset to the Academy, however, may need to work on a specific area of development before receiving a direct appointment. The Scholars program has nothing to do with demographics or race. The Coast Guard does have an Officer development program that is specifically geared toward underrepresented populations and it is called CSPI. (College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative).

Okay thank you.
