Signs of ‘normal’

Interesting, maybe not surprising, that only 80% of the Ike CSG elected to get the vaccine.

would have thought there would be more voluntoldedness

also assuming that the 20% who declined are young, healthy, and generally at very low risk for serious problems if the encounter the virus. the article states they are shooting for at least one port call - i'm sure they are excited about that

The “voluntoldness” might happen in a different way. Unvaccinated sailors might not be allowed ashore, depending on port of call local restrictions or concern about them catching it, being asymptomatic and spreading it to others vulnerable to the virus. I am glad I am not having to make decisions on this kind of stuff anymore.

Exactly. There are several reasons for being placed on class Charlie liberty. I had to report to the CO those who had an STD, we now call STI, and they were placed on liberty restriction which was most often Charlie.

I'm sure though Ike strike group personnel would be classified in a kinder. gentler nomenclature.

That's the "Fauci Ouchie" and needs to be treated with Motrin and Fresh Dry Socks
Cures everything. The Master Chief IDC on the staff I worked on swore by a 800 mg Motrin from the massive jar in his cabinet, with a bite-size Snickers and a big glass of water, or half a caffeinated soda, to defeat the stress headaches caused by the admiral we worked for.

Speaking of "signs of normal", any guesses as to when club sports, non-varsity activities will happen? The class/prt/plebe stuff can be a heavy burden with no way to work off steam. The Dant just cut off access to the basketball courts. I'm just an observer and I get the whole embrace the suck thing, but this just seems to be increasing the suck. 💁

The basketball courts in MacD were always “off limits” this year but they just started enforcing it because they moved cardio equipment in there so it could be used socially distanced. Pretty sure the outdoor courts are still open. Also the weightroom is now open at 23 person capacity and now utilizes a weekly signup sheet to avoid the 2-hour lines of last semester. We have a long way to go but I’d definitely say we’re trending in the right direction. Liberty was just unlocked (much faster than happened last semester) covid rates have gone down in the Brigade and in Annapolis, faculty are getting vaccinated, summer trainings are projected to happen, and King Hall just opened up a “fueling station” where every mid can pick up protein bars and shakes between meals.

On the other hand “normal” also means bringing back parades! :bang:

♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
(And sorry about the parades 😬)

At CGA in the fall they had an intercompany (IC) sports competition, they called the quarantine cup, because most of the fall varsity sports were cancelled, or had only one or two games/meets. Fun events - flag football, ultimate frisbee, water polo (in floating rings), corn hole, bowling and table tennis, among others. Something for everyone. They had a great time, and the winning company got bragging rights. Those that normally play varsity sports even enjoyed the chance for something different. Might be more of a challenge to plan at NA just because of the size, but it was a huge morale booster at CGA from what I heard from my cadet.

I'm glad things are improving. That's encouraging. Cardio and weights aren't quite the same as participating in a sport, and I'm not sure the outdoor courts are playable at the moment 😂 But, it is nice to see steps in the right direction.

My son’s club sport just started up once a week practices, which is at least something. He said last night that the scuttlebutt ( I.e completely unsubstantiated rumor) was to expect brigade wide vaccination in April. Swim classes are going - they make them line up close together on the deck but they can’t use the locker room. He only has one in-person class

That's great! What sport?
I have been assured it’s a real sport but I’m dubious (but they do play other schools on the East Coast, Army, and Air Force when it’s not a global pandemic) - ultimate frisbee. Far cry from high school wrestling.

@Kierkegaard Is fieldball long gone, “the game of prisons and USNA?” Mids always returned from those cold, muddy, bloody, exhausted and thoroughly pleased with themselves. Guaranteed to bleed off stress. Probably too much flying saliva for COVID safety.

I think it was still around in 2018.

My kids have friends who play. It's a great sport and they take it very seriously 😎
I'm glad for him that he gets that team dynamic and some fun as well.

I played Fieldball as a firstie for winter sports season. Everyone wore multiple layers of sweats, no gucci water/snow proof stuff and it was a lot of fun although pretty rough and tumble (brutal) compared to just about anything else.

I never knew that was what it was called!

Plebe year a bunch of upperclassmen showed only their human sides to us and taught us how to play. It was late one weeknight, the week after a blizzard and Hospital Point was covered in a foot of hard-packed snow. The previous night every male of the firstie class came back from what based on their primal-macho cheering sounded like was a wild party, but when we saw them they were in their NWUs with sweatshirts on, soaked having come back from the time of their lives, letting out all their pentup energy. They sent us Plebes an ominous email the next day offering to show us what they were doing later that night. In my mind I expected a hoarde of hidden SEAL-selects ready to pelt us with snowballs as soon as we got out to the field, but the curiosity prevailed, and it turned out they were there to pass on the torch. The only rule: Be respectful, especially to the sensitive areas of the body. Of course we all had different interpretations of what that meant.
