I am aware that the parents guide states this is a preferred form of communication to a DS/DD. My question is will my DS be allowed to load the software onto his computer or is it included when he receives it? Are there any other helpful hints re Skype? We have never used it before.

I don't believe Skype will be loaded on their laptops, it wan't the case last year but things might have changed. Your PC can also add some Skype Credits ($10) to his account which will allow him to call to any number (land line).

Should you have an IPhone, Blackberry or Android, you can also get a separate free Skype account and communicate with your DS/DS without being near a computer.

Best time to Skype is after 10pm EST or on weekend, don't abuse it though.

Finally, Skype loads automatically when the computer is running. This doesn't mean your DS/DD is available, let your DS/DD decide when to call and initiate the call.

I just got a letter from my son. He said they can only skype when they get their own personal lap top. They may not skype from the computers set up temporarily in the library. He said they can only skype after 10 pm. He said he needs a head set that has a mic and headphones for skype. He was going to look in the nex before he asks me to send one. You will really enjoy being able to skype. This is new to me also. We practiced before my son left so I would know what to do when he calls me. It is amazing. I have since spoken to my daughter in Australia via skype.:thumb:

Any headset will do. DS uses his iPhone headset, it works just fine with his laptop:cool:
