My son applied to SLE on 1/31 and I'm seeing where a lot of kids of have received a response and many who actually heard back within a few weeks. He received an email asking for his tshirt size and thanking him for his application but nothing indicating he had a spot. He has checked daily, both his email account, his spam folder and his West Point portal. He's getting a little worried as it's now April 1. Is there a way for him to "check" his status?

I'd suggest reaching out after checking spam/deleted folders. Saying this just because the t-shirt request is odd if haven't been accepted. My son received something similar last year and somehow the initial acceptance email was lost. So my suggestions is to search first, then reach out explaining you fear you missed an email.

I remember last year DS received a text message on his phone first.

I believe t-shirt size is information requested on the initial submission so I would not read too much into that. The email confirming they have received all information indicated they would notify everyone by mid April.

Yes, the initial submission in the portal had the t-shirt size, but so did his initial email from the admissions team. It thanked him for his application, gave him a point of contact, told him what to expect for the remainder of the application to West Point and when it will open. It also included a link that he clicked on and that had a google doc type check list of sizes for different items. He hit submit and that was that. That part of the original email is no longer available and he hasn't heard anything since then.

We have not received any emails regarding the t-shirt size, only the acceptance email. Then our portal was updated with SLE instructions and the checklist. Does your son’s portal show any indication of him getting accepted into SLE?

Same thing happened to me last year and I received an official acceptance email either a couple hours later or the next day, I can’t remember.

Strange. He's never rec'd anything after that, but has sent a few emails and called multiple times but can never get through. He has tried to update his application as well as he was recently selected as a delegate to Boys State. He watched a SLE FaceBook Live and was told via that platform updates were possible by reaching out to admissions email which he has but..... crickets...

There is so much "hurry up and wait" in this process it's crazy. Hoping he gets some kind of response, but if not, take heart, you do NOT need to do SLE to get into West Point. Congratulations on being selected to Boys State! That is an amazing accomplishment, and will really help his WCS as far as leadership is concerned. Keep focusing on other things - asking for LOR's before the school year ends, start framing essays, and collate all your MOC's deadlines. Keep working on physical strength and obtaining leadership positions (Varsity athlete, Captain/Co-Captain, leadership positions in clubs) and volunteerism.

My son was a Beta Tester, so applied early and he still hasn't gotten an acceptance email. He has a 4.2 GPA, 2 /350 i n his class, 32 on ACT with a 36 Stem score accepted into Boys State as well. I am wondering if we haven't heard anything by now if possibly he wasn't accepted. Also, he did the Stem camp in 9 grade has been to the campus loved it. I know there was that question on the application if they attended, and wondering if they are taking those who possibly haven't had the opportunity to experience westpoint in this capacity.

No one knows for sure. But, I'm guessing they want students from around the country that are potentially interested in attending West Point but have never had the experience of being at or experiencing West Point in some capacity. So, I'm guessing this is part of the goal of the program.. Another guess is that's probably why the question is included if the student has already done a summer program at the academy.

As you know, USMA has a limited number of spaces, and typically, they see 3000+ applications for the program. I have a number of well qualified students who were not selected. The good news is your son has initiated the application process, and he can start it in June when it opens.

If your son would like to make another visit, then there are other great ways to see the Academy. One good route is by attending one of the USMA summer sports camps. Many of my students have participated in them across all of the SAs. Students stay in the dorms, eat in the mess hall, meet cadets and staff, and they also work with the coaching staff.

Just as a side point, you son attending Boys State will be much more valuable on his formal application to West Point than if he attends SLE. There is no real admissions benefit to SLE other than possibly knocking out the CFA and interview early. But participation in SLE does not carry any weight on the application. Boys State absolutely carries weight.

I went to the WP Leadership & Diversity in STEM camp in 2022. Several of us kept the group chat and I know that 5 of us made it to SLE this year that applied - 1 is still waiting to hear back from USMA but got into USNA summer seminar- and he went to the USNA STEM on Deck in 2022 with me as well. Maybe he still has the group chat on his phone?

it doesn't

It must be very frustrating for you and for your son. Since your son has reached out to admissions, I would hope you hear back good news soon.
Yes, he's pretty frustrated. I'm impressed with the amount of times he has reached out and tried to communicate and follow up especially after getting no response. I understand they likely have 1000s of kids emailing them but... a response literally takes maybe 15 seconds.

With all due respect, it should not be frustrating for you at this point. The confirmation email from WP said they would notify everyone by mid April. Today is April 3rd. You and your son are doing yourself a disservice if you are emailing and calling WP admissions personnel about an SLE application. They are in the throws of assembling a class for 2024.

Much of this process is a test of patience. The Army works as the Army works.... This is just the beginning of a very long process.

He was told to call or email the admissions team with questions or updates to his application, this is both posted in his portal and he was told the same after speaking with his field force representative - which he has done. His frustration is that he is trying to do as he was told and getting no further direction or response. He's quite familiar with military life, he is not familiar with lack of communication when doing as he's told. Also, I have not reached out to West Point, that is not my place, I simply came on here and asked a few questions.
